HeyGen Interactive Avatar is a real-time AI avatar technology that allows businesses and developers to create interactive digital humans that can listen, respond, speak, and communicate with users in real time. The product has evolved into LiveAvatar by HeyGen, a separate production platform focused specifically on real-time conversational avatar experiences rather than the pre-rendered videos created through the standard HeyGen platform.

LiveAvatar is designed to give AI applications a human-like visual interface. Instead of displaying only text or a conventional chatbot interface, an application can present an animated avatar that speaks responses with synchronized facial movements, lip movements, expressions, and gestures. The avatar can receive information through voice, video, or text and respond during a live session.

The platform is primarily intended for developers and businesses building interactive AI applications. Common applications include customer-support assistants, virtual sales representatives, AI tutors, language-learning partners, onboarding assistants, training coaches, digital presenters, and interactive brand experiences. HeyGen also highlights applications in recruiting, sales training, education, retail, and live events.

One of LiveAvatar’s main features is its low-latency streaming architecture. HeyGen states that the platform can deliver the first video frame in under 300 milliseconds and is designed for large-scale concurrent sessions. The current LiveAvatar website also advertises 1080p avatar streaming, unlimited concurrency, and a 99.99% uptime target for the platform.

Users can choose from a library of preset avatars or create a custom avatar. Custom avatars can be created from a single image or from approximately two minutes of video footage. A custom avatar can then be used as a persistent digital character across interactive sessions. HeyGen requires appropriate consent and follows specific recording requirements when creating custom avatars.

LiveAvatar provides two primary integration modes. Full Mode provides the complete conversational stack, including the avatar, streaming infrastructure, speech recognition, language model, text-to-speech, and voice-agent components. This option is intended for teams that want a more managed implementation.

Lite Mode provides the avatar and real-time streaming layer while allowing developers to bring their own speech recognition, language model, text-to-speech provider, and conversation logic. This provides greater control for teams that already have an AI-agent or voice-agent infrastructure.

The platform can therefore be connected to external AI systems. HeyGen’s documentation describes integrations with systems and frameworks such as OpenAI, LiveKit, Pipecat, Agora, ElevenLabs Agents, OpenAI Realtime, and Gemini Live. Developers can use these systems to control the conversation while LiveAvatar supplies the real-time visual avatar layer.

LiveAvatar also provides an API and SDK for embedding interactive avatars into websites, applications, and other digital experiences. Developers can request session tokens, select avatars, establish streaming sessions, and control the avatar programmatically. The current platform emphasizes API-first integration and provides a developer workflow intended to allow a basic integration to be set up quickly.

The platform supports both public and custom avatars. Developers can also customize the avatar’s context or knowledge instructions so that it behaves according to a particular role or business scenario. For example, an avatar can be configured as a sales representative, tutor, support assistant, recruiter, or presenter. In Full Mode, the current platform uses OpenAI 4o-mini for its managed language-model component, while Lite Mode allows customers to connect their own LLM.

LiveAvatar uses its own credit system, separate from HeyGen’s standard API credits. In Full Mode, one LiveAvatar credit provides approximately 30 seconds of streaming, while Lite Mode provides approximately one minute per credit. This difference reflects the additional conversational infrastructure supplied by Full Mode.

The product has also been separated from the standard HeyGen application. Existing HeyGen account credentials can be used to access LiveAvatar, but LiveAvatar has its own platform, plans, settings, and avatar infrastructure. HeyGen’s standard video avatars and LiveAvatar custom avatars are currently not cross-compatible.

HeyGen was founded in 2020 and initially developed as an AI video and avatar company. The company launched its HeyGen-branded platform in 2022 after previously operating under earlier company and product names. Interactive Avatar subsequently developed into the dedicated LiveAvatar platform for real-time conversational experiences.

Pricing

HeyGen Interactive Avatar, now offered as LiveAvatar, has its own standalone pricing separate from standard HeyGen subscriptions. The current LiveAvatar plans include a Free option, Starter, Essential, Business, and Enterprise.

The current Starter plan costs $19/month and includes 200 LiveAvatar credits, a maximum five-minute session duration, 720p avatar access, and pay-as-you-go overage. The Essential plan costs $99/month and includes 1,100 credits, sessions of up to 20 minutes, and access to a custom 720p LiveAvatar.

The Business plan is listed at $475/month and provides 5,000 credits, sessions of up to 60 minutes, 1080p custom-avatar support, and full API access. Enterprise plans are customized for organizations requiring larger-scale deployments and annual usage.

There is also a free testing option. The current Help Center states that the Free plan allows sessions of up to two minutes with one concurrent session, providing a limited amount of streaming for testing integrations.

Review

HeyGen Interactive Avatar is designed for a different purpose from conventional AI video generators. Instead of producing a finished video that users watch later, it creates a real-time digital person that can participate in a conversation.

Its main strength is the combination of realistic avatar rendering and real-time interaction. Businesses can use an avatar as the visible interface for an AI assistant, while developers can connect their own conversational systems behind it. The Lite Mode is particularly useful when a company already has its own LLM, speech-recognition, and text-to-speech infrastructure.

The API-first architecture also makes the product suitable for embedding interactive avatars into existing applications rather than forcing users to interact through HeyGen’s own interface. Custom avatars provide an additional option for organizations that want a recognizable digital representative or branded character.

Another important advantage is scalability. LiveAvatar is designed for concurrent real-time sessions, and the current platform advertises unlimited concurrency and a 99.99% uptime target. These capabilities are particularly relevant to customer-facing applications where many users may interact with an avatar simultaneously.

The main consideration is that LiveAvatar is a specialized real-time infrastructure product rather than a general-purpose video editor. Users who only need pre-recorded avatar videos may have more capabilities than they require. LiveAvatar also has a separate credit system from standard HeyGen subscriptions, meaning that having a regular HeyGen subscription does not automatically provide LiveAvatar streaming access.

Another consideration is that language availability depends partly on the AI and voice stack used. Full Mode uses HeyGen’s managed conversational infrastructure, while Lite Mode gives developers responsibility for their own LLM, ASR, and TTS providers. This makes Lite Mode flexible, but it also means that multilingual capabilities can depend on the external providers selected.
