Factory AI

Factory AI is an AI-powered software development platform built around autonomous coding agents called Droids. The platform is designed to help software teams automate work across the software development lifecycle, from planning and implementation to testing, code review, documentation, incident response, and release.

Factory’s approach goes beyond using AI as a coding assistant inside an editor. Droids can receive a task in natural language, understand a codebase, plan the required changes, write and test code, and create a pull request. They can operate through the Factory App, terminal, IDEs, browser, Slack, and other connected engineering environments. Developers can also adjust the agent’s autonomy and require approval for sensitive actions.

Factory’s broader Software Factory platform connects multiple AI-driven stages of development. These include triage, planning, code execution, code review, QA, security review, documentation, incident response, deployment, and analytics. The company describes this as an agent-native approach to software development where repeatable engineering processes can be automated rather than relying on a developer to manually coordinate every step.

Droids are designed to maintain context across development environments. Factory supports repository understanding, agentic search across codebases, persistent sessions, and organization-level context. This allows an agent to work across many files and understand relationships within a project rather than treating every coding request as an isolated prompt.

The platform also emphasizes model independence. Factory supports leading frontier and open-weight models, including GPT, Claude, Gemini, and other models, and allows teams to select different models for different tasks. This model-routing approach is intended to reduce dependence on a single AI provider and allow organizations to balance performance and cost.

Factory provides several ways to use Droids. Developers can work through the desktop application, Droid CLI, SDK, IDE integrations, web and mobile interfaces, and cloud-based Droid Computers. The platform supports environments such as VS Code, JetBrains, Vim, and terminal-based workflows, allowing developers to keep much of their existing development setup.

One of Factory’s key capabilities is full software-development-lifecycle automation. Teams can create repeatable automations for tasks such as issue triage, code generation, pull-request review, QA, documentation, and incident response. Missions can also coordinate longer-running work involving multiple agents.

Factory also provides enterprise deployment and governance options. Organizations can run Droids in cloud-managed, hybrid, on-premises, or air-gapped environments. Enterprise controls include identity management, model access policies, command policies, MCP controls, sandboxing, audit capabilities, analytics, and data-residency options. Factory’s enterprise documentation also describes support for EU deployments and regulated environments.

Security is a significant part of the platform’s enterprise positioning. Factory currently lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and ISO 42001 among its security and compliance programs. Enterprise deployments can also use dedicated compute, SSO/SAML, SAML/SCIM provisioning, zero data retention, audit logging, customer-managed encryption keys, and data residency controls.

Factory was founded in 2023 with the mission of bringing greater autonomy to software engineering. Its Droids became generally available in May 2025, initially providing autonomous capabilities across coding, incident response, codebase research, Linear management, product-spec creation, and pull-request review.

In 2026, Factory expanded its positioning from individual coding agents toward a broader Software Factory model. The company describes this as an interconnected, agent-native system where AI agents participate throughout the software lifecycle and engineering teams manage goals, workflows, and outcomes rather than simply individual coding prompts.

Factory is therefore best suited to software-development organizations that want to move beyond AI-assisted coding toward agent-driven engineering workflows. Its strongest use cases include autonomous coding, codebase research, testing, code review, documentation, issue triage, incident response, security review, and repeatable software-delivery automation.
