Google Cloud Code Assist

Google Cloud Code is a set of AI-assisted IDE plugins from Google Cloud that helps developers create, develop, debug, deploy, and integrate applications with Google Cloud services directly from their preferred development environment. Cloud Code integrates Gemini Code Assist, Google’s AI-powered coding assistant, bringing code completion, code generation, conversational assistance, and other AI development capabilities into supported IDEs.

Cloud Code is designed particularly for cloud-native development. It provides tooling for applications running on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), Cloud Run, Compute Engine, and serverless environments, allowing developers to work with cloud resources without constantly switching between their IDE and the Google Cloud Console.

The platform supports development workflows for Kubernetes and Cloud Run, including creating and managing Kubernetes clusters, deploying Cloud Run services, viewing resources and logs, managing secrets, and debugging running applications. Cloud Code uses tools such as Skaffold, Jib, kubectl, Kustomize, and Cloud Build to support local development and production deployment workflows.

One of its main AI capabilities comes from Gemini Code Assist. Developers can receive inline code completions, generate code from comments or prompts, ask questions through an in-IDE chat interface, transform existing code, and use smart actions. Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise also provide broader AI-assisted development capabilities across the software development lifecycle.

Cloud Code also helps developers work with Google Cloud APIs. Its API tooling allows developers to discover APIs, view documentation, add APIs to projects, and work with Google Cloud services from within the IDE.

For Kubernetes development, Cloud Code provides YAML authoring support with inline documentation, snippets, completions, schema validation, and linting. Developers can also use Kubernetes and Cloud Run explorers to inspect resources and access logs without relying entirely on command-line tools.

Remote debugging is another important capability. Cloud Code uses Skaffold to provide an IDE-based debugging experience for applications running in cloud-native environments, allowing developers to set breakpoints, inspect variables, and view container logs.

Cloud Code supports several development environments, including Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Cloud Workstations, and Cloud Shell Editor. Gemini Code Assist is integrated into Cloud Code and is available in supported IDE environments including VS Code and JetBrains IDEs.

Cloud Code was introduced by Google in April 2019 as a set of plugins for IntelliJ and Visual Studio Code intended to simplify cloud-native application development.

Pricing

Cloud Code itself is available free of charge to Google Cloud customers. Google Cloud’s current product page explicitly states that there is no separate charge for Cloud Code.

However, the Gemini Code Assist functionality integrated with Cloud Code has separate licensing for Standard and Enterprise editions. Current Google Cloud pricing lists:

  • Gemini Code Assist Standard: $0.031232877/hour with a monthly commitment, or $0.026027397/hour with a 12-month commitment.
  • Gemini Code Assist Enterprise: $0.073972603/hour with a monthly commitment, or $0.061643836/hour with a 12-month commitment.
  • Licenses are billed monthly.
  • Enterprise adds capabilities such as code customization using private repositories, Gemini in Apigee, Gemini in Application Integration, and additional Gemini Cloud Assist functionality.

This distinction is important when listing the product: Cloud Code = free IDE tooling; Gemini Code Assist = separately licensed AI assistance for Standard and Enterprise users.

Review

Google Cloud Code is a strong choice for developers building applications specifically on Google Cloud. Its biggest advantage is the tight connection between the IDE and cloud infrastructure. Developers can work with GKE, Cloud Run, Google Cloud APIs, Kubernetes configuration, logs, deployments, and debugging tools without constantly leaving their development environment.

The integration of Gemini Code Assist makes Cloud Code more capable for AI-assisted development. Developers can generate and complete code, ask coding questions, transform code, and receive contextual assistance directly inside supported IDEs.

Its main limitation is ecosystem focus. Cloud Code is primarily designed around Google Cloud and cloud-native workflows, so developers working mainly with other cloud platforms may not benefit from its full feature set. The AI functionality also needs to be distinguished from the free Cloud Code plugins because Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise require separate licenses.
