Sudowrite

Sudowrite is an AI-powered creative-writing platform built specifically for fiction writers. It is designed to help novelists, short-story writers, screenwriters, and other storytellers move from an initial idea to a finished draft by combining brainstorming, outlining, drafting, rewriting, scene development, feedback, and story organization in one workspace.

Sudowrite was founded in 2020 by writers Amit Gupta and James Yu, who originally built the product around their own experiences with writer’s block and fiction writing. Unlike general-purpose AI writing tools that try to serve marketing, business, academic, and creative users simultaneously, Sudowrite is deliberately focused on storytelling and fiction.

The platform describes itself as an AI writing partner rather than an autonomous replacement for the author. Its tools are designed to help writers generate ideas, continue passages, experiment with wording, develop scenes, and organize longer stories while keeping the writer responsible for the creative direction.

One of Sudowrite’s primary features is Write. The tool can look at the surrounding manuscript and suggest what could happen next. Users can choose between different approaches, including an automatic mode for generating possibilities and a guided mode where the writer gives the AI more specific instructions about the next part of the story.

Write is designed to work with the writer’s existing material rather than treating every prompt as an isolated request. Sudowrite says its system can use a substantial amount of the surrounding manuscript when generating suggestions, helping it maintain continuity with the story already being developed.

Another central feature is Describe. This tool helps writers add richer sensory details to a scene or object, including descriptions associated with sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. It can be used when a writer knows what needs to happen but wants help making the prose more vivid.

Sudowrite also provides Rewrite, which helps writers refine an existing passage. Users can use it to change phrasing, improve flow, adjust tone, or experiment with a different way of expressing the same moment. The feature is intended to support revision without requiring the writer to completely rewrite a passage manually.

For idea development, Sudowrite includes Brainstorm. This can generate names, plot twists, character ideas, worldbuilding elements, powers, conflicts, settings, and other creative possibilities. The tool is designed to help writers move forward when they know they want an idea but are unsure what direction to take.

Another important feature is First Draft. This tool can turn an outline or set of notes into a longer scene, generally producing around 800โ€“1,000 or more words depending on the task. It is intended to help writers move from planning into prose while leaving room for the writer to revise and shape the material afterward.

Sudowrite also provides Expand, which adds material to an existing passage. Writers can use it to slow down a moment, develop a scene in greater detail, or give an important beat more space. This is particularly useful when a draft has the right events but needs additional depth.

For larger projects, Sudowrite includes Scenes within its Draft workflow. Scenes provide a structured way to organize chapters around particular times, places, characters, or points of view. Writers can add extra instructions for a scene and use those details to guide AI-generated prose.

The Draft feature can then use those planned scenes to generate a much longer chapter. Sudowrite currently describes Draft as being able to generate approximately 3,000โ€“5,000+ words at a time, depending on the project’s requirements and the writer’s instructions.

This scene-based workflow is especially useful for novel writing because it separates the planning process from the final prose. Writers can define what should happen in each part of a chapter before asking the AI to expand the structure into prose.

Sudowrite’s most distinctive organizational feature is its Story Bible. The Story Bible stores information about characters, worldbuilding, style, plot, and other important details of a project. This allows the AI to reference the broader story rather than relying only on the immediately preceding paragraph.

The Story Bible can include elements such as character descriptions, relationships, locations, world rules, themes, plot information, and other details that need to remain consistent throughout a longer manuscript. This is particularly useful for novels and other projects where continuity becomes difficult to maintain manually.

Sudowrite also includes Feedback, which acts as an AI-based writing critique tool. Writers can use it to receive feedback on passages and identify areas that may need improvement. This can provide an additional perspective during revision without requiring the writer to immediately find an outside beta reader.

Another feature is Quick Edit, which is designed for smaller, focused changes to text. Rather than asking the AI to rewrite a large passage, writers can use targeted editing instructions to make a specific change to the selected text.

Sudowrite’s current platform includes a Plugins system that allows users to create custom AI tools for specialized writing workflows. Plugins can be used for writing, editing, or analysis, and can combine multiple actions into a single tool.

The platform currently has a directory containing more than 1,000 community-built plugins. These can be used for specialized tasks such as dialogue improvement, point-of-view changes, prose analysis, brainstorming, or other creative-writing workflows.

Users can also build their own plugins without traditional software development. Sudowrite provides a Plugin Builder where a writer can describe the task they want the tool to perform, after which the system creates a reusable custom writing function.

Sudowrite uses multiple AI models rather than depending on a single model provider. The company’s current documentation says it uses dozens of models, including current Claude models from Anthropic, OpenAI models, open-source models, and in-house fiction-focused models such as Muse.

The company’s own Muse model is specifically designed for fiction writing. Sudowrite positions Muse as a model trained and tuned for narrative prose, allowing the platform to provide fiction-oriented writing assistance rather than relying exclusively on general-purpose language models.

The combination of multiple models and proprietary processing is a major part of Sudowrite’s product design. The platform can select or route work through different models while applying additional narrative-focused processing around those models.

Sudowrite also places strong emphasis on maintaining the writer’s voice. Its writing features are designed to work from existing manuscript context, and the company emphasizes that the AI should support the author’s style rather than replace it.

For writers working on long projects, continuity is one of the platform’s biggest advantages. Story Bible, Scenes, Draft, Write, Rewrite, and Feedback can all operate around the same project, reducing the need to repeatedly explain characters, setting, plot, and style.

Sudowrite also supports fiction-specific brainstorming. Its tools are not restricted to generic marketing or business ideas; they are designed around narrative problems such as character development, plot structure, scene tension, worldbuilding, dialogue, and descriptive writing.

The platform’s current homepage positions Sudowrite as an AI writing partner for novels, screenplays, stories, and other fiction projects. Its examples emphasize moving from an initial idea to an outline, rough draft, revision, and final manuscript.

Sudowrite offers a free trial without requiring a credit card. New users can explore its writing tools before deciding whether to subscribe.

The platform currently has three subscription levels: Hobby & Student, Professional, and Max. All three plans provide access to the full feature set, with the primary difference being the number of monthly credits and how unused credits are handled.

Sudowrite’s current billing system is credit-based rather than strictly word-based. Credits are consumed according to the complexity of the AI task, including the amount of text read, the amount generated, and the model being used. This means one million credits does not correspond to a fixed number of generated words.

For example, generating a small continuation with an efficient model may consume relatively few credits, while asking Sudowrite to process a large Story Bible and generate a long chapter can consume significantly more.

The Hobby & Student plan is designed for people writing for fun or school. The Professional plan is aimed at longer projects such as novels and screenplays, while Max is designed for authors publishing multiple times per year or users who need substantially higher usage.

Max also provides a credit rollover system. Unused credits can roll over for up to 12 months, which provides additional flexibility for writers whose writing schedules vary from month to month.

Sudowrite also offers an optional Personal Setup Session. This is a paid one-on-one session with Sudowrite staff intended to help users understand the platform and configure their workflow.

The company’s pricing page describes an Enterprise option for organizations that need larger-scale or customized arrangements, with customers directed to contact Sudowrite for details.

Sudowrite supports almost any language for basic writing suggestions, according to its FAQ. When users click Write, the platform can attempt to match the language of the surrounding text. However, when other features are uncertain about a language, Sudowrite may fall back to English.

This means Sudowrite’s language support is broad but not equally optimized for every feature. Writers working in English will generally have the most comprehensive experience, while multilingual users should test their particular language in the free trial before relying on every feature.

Sudowrite does not claim ownership of the writing users enter into the platform or the content generated through it. Writers retain their rights to their own projects and generated material under the company’s terms.

The company also states that it does not use users’ writing to train Sudowrite or OpenAI models. This is an important consideration for writers who are concerned about their manuscripts being used as training data.

Sudowrite also says that its system does not intentionally plagiarize text and that the model generates content by predicting language rather than simply copying passages from a source database. Writers should nevertheless review generated material before publication and verify originality independently for professional use.

One of Sudowrite’s biggest strengths is the story-specific workflow. The platform has been designed around problems that fiction writers actually encounter: getting started, continuing a scene, developing a character, describing an image, organizing a novel, revising prose, and generating chapter drafts.

This makes it more specialized than general-purpose AI writing assistants. Someone creating a novel can keep characters, world details, scenes, plot structure, and manuscript text inside a connected project rather than treating each AI interaction as a separate conversation.

Another major strength is the ability to move between brainstorming and execution. A writer can brainstorm ideas, create scenes, generate a first draft, expand sections, rewrite passages, and request feedback without changing platforms.

The platform is also useful for writers who want AI assistance without surrendering full creative control. Most of its tools are designed to give multiple suggestions, allow editing, and let the writer decide which material belongs in the final work.

Sudowrite is not designed to be a general marketing-content platform. It does not primarily focus on SEO campaigns, CRM, social-media management, sales automation, or business communications. Its specialization is creative writing.

That focus is also a limitation for users outside fiction. A marketer looking for advertising copy, an SEO professional looking for keyword research, or a business user needing workflow automation may find other AI platforms more appropriate.

Sudowrite’s credit system is another consideration. Because credits do not map directly to a fixed number of words, it can take some time for new users to understand how much usage different features consume.

The platform is strongest when used as a creative collaborator for fiction, particularly for novels and screenplays. It is less useful as a broad all-purpose AI writing assistant.

Sudowrite has received very positive third-party feedback, although its independent review volume remains relatively small. G2 currently rates Sudowrite at 5.0/5 based on 2 reviews. Those reviewers specifically praise its fiction-focused writing tools, Story Bible, character and plot development, and ability to help writers overcome writer’s block.

The small G2 review sample means the rating should be interpreted cautiously. However, the reviews are consistent with Sudowrite’s core product positioning: its strongest value is in supporting fiction writers through ideation, development, drafting, and revision.

Sudowrite is particularly well suited to novelists, screenwriters, short-story writers, creative-writing students, and hobbyist fiction writers.

Review

Sudowrite is one of the most specialized AI writing platforms available because it is built specifically around fiction and storytelling rather than trying to serve every type of writer.

Its strongest feature is the way its tools work together. Story Bible stores important project information, Scenes organize chapters, Draft generates longer passages, Write continues scenes, Rewrite improves prose, and Brainstorm helps develop ideas. This creates a connected workflow that is particularly valuable for novel-length projects.

The platform’s fiction-oriented Muse model is another major advantage. Sudowrite combines it with other AI models and proprietary processing to provide writing assistance tailored to narrative prose.

The tool is also strong for writer’s block. Brainstorm can generate possibilities, while Write can provide several directions for the next passage. This gives writers a way to move forward without requiring the AI to determine the entire story.

Plugins add another layer of flexibility. With more than 1,000 community-created tools and the ability to build custom plugins, writers can create highly specialized workflows around their own writing habits.

G2 currently rates Sudowrite 5.0/5 from 2 reviews. Reviewers describe it as particularly strong for fiction, praising the Story Bible, creative assistance, manuscript support, and usefulness for developing novels.

The rating should be interpreted cautiously because only two independent reviews are currently available. The review sample is too small to draw broad conclusions about customer satisfaction.

The main limitation is the credit-based pricing model. Credits are not directly equivalent to words, so users may initially find it difficult to predict exactly how quickly their allowance will be consumed.

Language support is broad for basic writing suggestions, but Sudowrite states that some features may fall back to English when the system is uncertain about the language. Writers working outside English should therefore test the specific features they need.

Another limitation is specialization. Sudowrite is excellent for fiction but is not designed as a complete SEO, marketing, sales, or business-content platform.

For writers working on novels and screenplays, however, its specialized workflow can be a major advantage. The combination of Story Bible, Scenes, Draft, Brainstorm, Write, Rewrite, Feedback, and Plugins gives creative writers a comprehensive environment for developing long-form stories.

Sudowrite is best suited to fiction writers who want AI assistance throughout the creative process while maintaining control over the story and their own voice.
