DaVinci Resolve AI is the artificial-intelligence-powered feature set within DaVinci Resolve, Blackmagic Design’s professional post-production application for video editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post-production, and photo editing. Rather than being a standalone AI video generator, DaVinci Resolve combines AI-assisted tools with a complete professional post-production environment. The current DaVinci Resolve 21 release includes new AI-assisted capabilities alongside its established editing, color, Fusion, and Fairlight workflows.
The AI functionality is primarily powered by the DaVinci Neural Engine, Blackmagic Design’s machine-learning technology built into DaVinci Resolve. The Neural Engine uses deep neural networks and machine learning to automate tasks such as facial recognition, object detection, smart reframing, speed retiming, Super Scale, automatic color correction, and color matching. These tools are designed to reduce repetitive work while keeping the editor or colorist in control of the final result.
DaVinci Resolve AI is particularly notable because its AI capabilities are integrated across multiple stages of post-production. Editors can use AI for organizing and finding media, creating transcripts and subtitles, editing dialogue, reframing footage, tracking objects, improving images, and working with audio. Colorists can use automated color tools, while Fairlight provides AI-assisted audio workflows.
The current DaVinci Resolve 21 release adds new AI-assisted tools such as IntelliSearch, which is designed to help users search content more quickly, and CineFocus, which provides AI-assisted control over focus points. Blackmagic Design also highlights new AI-assisted facial-retouching capabilities in Resolve 21.
Earlier Neural Engine capabilities remain important to the platform. Magic Mask uses AI-based object and person isolation, allowing editors and colorists to select subjects without manually drawing complex masks frame by frame. The technology can track selected subjects as they move through a shot, making it useful for selective color correction, effects, and compositing.
IntelliTrack provides AI-assisted tracking capabilities for visual effects, color, and other workflows. It can track objects through a scene and help editors apply effects or adjustments to moving subjects. This reduces the amount of manual tracking required for many common post-production tasks.
Smart Reframe automatically analyzes footage and helps keep important subjects within the frame when converting content to different aspect ratios. This is particularly useful when adapting widescreen material for vertical or square social-media formats.
DaVinci Resolve also uses AI for Speed Warp, an advanced retiming technology that creates intermediate frames to produce smoother slow-motion footage. The feature is available in the Studio version and is designed for professional video workflows where conventional frame interpolation may not provide the desired result.
Super Scale uses machine learning to upscale footage to higher resolutions. It can be used when working with lower-resolution source material that needs to be incorporated into a higher-resolution project. Studio includes additional AI-powered Super Scale options compared with the free version.
For dialogue and audio production, DaVinci Resolve Studio includes AI-assisted features such as Voice Isolation, Dialogue Separator, and the Fairlight Audio Assistant. These tools can help isolate dialogue from unwanted background sounds, separate dialogue from other audio elements, and automate aspects of audio organization and mixing.
Voice Convert is another AI-based capability that can transform a recorded voice using supported voice-conversion workflows. This is intended as a production tool rather than a replacement for traditional voice recording and editing.
DaVinci Resolve also provides AI-assisted transcription and subtitle creation. The software can analyze spoken audio and automatically create subtitles and transcripts. Speaker detection can help distinguish different speakers in supported workflows. These features can reduce the manual effort involved in preparing dialogue-heavy projects.
IntelliScript provides an AI-assisted approach to script-based editing. It can compare a script with recorded material and help construct an initial timeline from available footage. This can be useful for interviews, scripted productions, and other projects where recorded dialogue follows a prepared script.
Another AI workflow is Music Remixer, which can help adjust music elements within an edit. Editors can work with different components of a music track and modify the balance of elements such as vocals, drums, bass, and other components where supported.
DaVinci Resolve AI is also integrated into the color page. Auto Color can automatically make technical color adjustments, while Shot Matching can help bring clips closer together visually. These tools provide a starting point that colorists can refine manually using Resolve’s extensive grading controls.
The platform is not limited to AI. DaVinci Resolve remains a complete professional post-production suite divided into dedicated workspaces. The Media page manages footage and assets, Cut and Edit handle video editing, Fusion provides visual effects and motion graphics, Color handles professional color grading, Fairlight provides audio post-production, and Deliver handles rendering and output.
DaVinci Resolve also supports professional collaboration through Blackmagic Cloud. Multiple users can work on the same project, with editors, colorists, visual-effects artists, and sound engineers able to work simultaneously. Project libraries can be hosted and accessed remotely, making the application suitable for distributed post-production teams.
The software supports Mac, Windows, and Linux, making it available across the major desktop operating systems used for professional video production. Blackmagic Design also offers a dedicated iPad version with a subset of the desktop feature set.
DaVinci Resolve can also work with third-party OpenFX and audio plugins, title and motion-graphics templates, different storage environments, and workflow integrations. Blackmagic Design provides APIs that allow developers to connect workflow and asset-management systems with Resolve. The software can also exchange projects and media with other professional post-production applications such as Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, and Adobe Premiere Pro.
The biggest distinction between DaVinci Resolve AI and simpler AI video applications is the level of manual control. Resolve does not primarily attempt to create an entire finished video from a single prompt. Instead, its AI capabilities accelerate professional editing, color, visual-effects, audio, media-management, and finishing tasks.
DaVinci Resolve has two primary software editions: the free DaVinci Resolve and the paid DaVinci Resolve Studio. The current DaVinci Resolve 21 page lists the standard version as free, while DaVinci Resolve Studio is sold as a one-time purchase. The current U.S. Blackmagic Design page lists Studio at US$315.
The free version provides substantial professional editing, color, Fusion, and Fairlight capabilities. However, many of the more advanced AI features powered by the DaVinci Neural Engine are reserved for DaVinci Resolve Studio.
DaVinci Resolve AI combines AI-assisted production with one of the most comprehensive professional post-production environments available. Its AI tools are designed primarily to accelerate editing and finishing rather than replace the editor.
The DaVinci Neural Engine is particularly useful for repetitive tasks. Facial recognition, object detection, tracking, smart reframing, transcription, Super Scale, automatic color, and other functions can reduce manual work while allowing users to make detailed adjustments afterward.
Another important advantage is that AI is distributed throughout the application. Users can move from editing to color, visual effects, and audio without leaving the same project. This makes AI-assisted workflows more connected than using several specialized applications.
The free version is also significant. Users can access a substantial portion of DaVinci Resolve without paying a subscription, while Studio adds the advanced Neural Engine tools and additional professional features.
The main limitation is complexity. DaVinci Resolve is a professional post-production application with separate pages for editing, color, Fusion, Fairlight, and other workflows. New users may need time to learn the interface and professional concepts.
AI capabilities also vary between the free and Studio editions. Many of the more advanced Neural Engine features are Studio-only, meaning users who specifically want the full AI toolkit need to purchase the paid version.
For filmmakers, professional editors, colorists, visual-effects artists, audio professionals, production companies, educators, and advanced content creators, DaVinci Resolve AI provides AI assistance within a full post-production environment rather than a simplified prompt-to-video workflow.
