Descript

Descript is an AI-powered video and audio creation platform that combines recording, transcription, text-based editing, podcast production, screen recording, AI video editing, and content repurposing in one workspace. Its central approach is text-based editing: once audio or video is transcribed, users can edit the media by editing the transcript, making video editing feel similar to working with a document.

Descript’s current AI system includes Underlord, an AI video co-editor that can perform multi-step editing tasks across a project. Users can ask Underlord to tighten a recording, remove filler words and retakes, improve audio, create clips, add captions, generate B-roll, translate content, and perform other editing operations. Descript also offers more focused AI tools such as Studio Sound, Eye Contact, Green Screen, Automatic Multicam, Video Regenerate, AI speech, and AI-generated media.

The platform is particularly suited to video podcasts, interviews, tutorials, webinars, product demonstrations, educational videos, marketing content, and social-media clips. Users can record directly in Descript or import existing recordings, transcribe them automatically, edit the transcript, improve the audio and video, generate captions, and create shorter versions for different platforms.

Descript also includes generative media capabilities. Depending on the plan and available models, users can generate images, video, audio, voiceovers, avatars, and other media. AI-generated video can be used to fill gaps in existing footage or create new material. Descript’s current usage system assigns AI-credit costs to individual features, with costs varying according to the operation and selected generative model.

For audio production, Descript provides Studio Sound for background-noise removal and voice enhancement, AI speech with stock voices and custom voice cloning, audio regeneration, transcription, dubbing, and other podcast-oriented tools. This makes it useful for creators who need to manage both the audio and visual sides of production.

Descript also supports content localization and repurposing. Users can translate videos, create captions, generate clips from longer recordings, and adapt content for platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn. Business plans include video translation and dubbing in 30+ languages with proofreading.

For teams, Descript provides shared workspaces, Brand Studio, collaboration features, SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, and enterprise security controls. Its current Enterprise offering includes SOC 2 Type II controls, custom retention, AI/data controls, dedicated customer support, and custom procurement options.

Descript also provides a beta API that can import media, create projects, trigger Underlord edits, manage projects, and publish Descript share links. It can be accessed directly through HTTP, command-line tools, Zapier, and compatible AI coding tools. Descript also provides an MCP connection for interacting with the platform through supported AI assistants.

Descript was founded in 2017. Its development also incorporated technology from Lyrebird, an AI speech company founded in 2017 and acquired by Descript in 2019.

Pricing

Descript currently has Free, Hobbyist, Creator, Business, and Enterprise options. The current pricing page shows the following standard monthly rates, with annual billing providing savings of up to 35% compared with monthly billing:

The Hobbyist plan includes 10 media hours and 400 AI credits per month. Creator includes 30 media hours and 800 AI credits per month, while Business includes 40 media hours and 1,500 AI credits per month. Enterprise plans have customized resource allocations.

The Free plan provides 60 media minutes per month and 100 one-time AI credits. Hobbyist provides 600 media minutes per month, Creator provides 1,800 minutes, and Business provides 2,400 minutes.

Descript uses two main forms of usage: media minutes and AI credits. Media minutes cover imported or recorded media processed in Descript, while AI credits are consumed by AI-powered operations. Different functions have different credit costs; for example, creating clips costs 30 credits, AI Video Maker costs 25 credits, and video generation can cost approximately 8–24 credits depending on the model.

Review

Descript stands out because it combines AI-assisted editing with a document-style editing workflow. Instead of relying entirely on a traditional timeline, users can edit the transcript and have the corresponding video or audio change with it. This approach can make cutting interviews, podcasts, tutorials, and talking-head videos considerably more straightforward.

Its Underlord AI co-editor expands this workflow by handling multi-step editing tasks. Users can give instructions rather than manually performing every operation, while still retaining access to the normal editor when more precise control is needed.

Descript is also strong for repurposing content. A long recording can be transcribed, cleaned up, turned into clips, captioned, translated, and adapted for different platforms from the same workspace. This is especially useful for podcast and video teams that regularly turn one recording into multiple pieces of content.

The main consideration is its resource-based pricing system. Current plans use both media minutes and AI credits, and different AI functions consume different amounts of credits. Generative video, avatars, dubbing, lip sync, and other resource-intensive features can therefore consume credits faster than simpler editing operations.

Another consideration is that some advanced capabilities are restricted to higher plans. For example, 4K export and broader generative-media access are included with Creator, while Business adds features such as 30+ language translation and dubbing with proofreading, custom avatars, Brand Studio access, and priority support.
