GitLab Duo is an AI-native suite of development and DevSecOps capabilities built directly into the GitLab platform. It helps software teams use AI throughout the software development lifecycle, from planning and coding to code review, security analysis, testing, troubleshooting, and deployment. GitLab Duo includes both non-agentic AI assistance for specific tasks and agentic capabilities that can work more autonomously on complex development workflows.

GitLab introduced GitLab Duo in June 2023 as a suite of AI capabilities integrated into its DevSecOps platform. The initial capabilities included code suggestions, code explanation, vulnerability explanation, issue-comment summaries, and other AI-assisted development functions. GitLab subsequently expanded the suite with conversational AI, code review, testing, root-cause analysis, and agentic development capabilities.

One of GitLab Duo’s main strengths is its integration with the entire software development lifecycle. Instead of limiting AI to writing code, GitLab Duo can assist with planning, development, security, testing, code review, CI/CD, and operational workflows. This gives teams access to AI assistance within the same platform where their source code, issues, merge requests, pipelines, and security information are managed.

GitLab Duo Code Suggestions provides AI-powered coding assistance in supported IDEs. Developers can receive code completions and generate code from natural-language comments. The feature is designed to use available coding context to provide relevant suggestions while developers work.

GitLab Duo Chat provides a conversational interface for interacting with AI about development and DevSecOps tasks. It can analyze code, issues, merge requests, and other GitLab artifacts, while also helping generate code, tests, and documentation. It is available through the GitLab interface and supported IDE extensions.

GitLab Duo can also explain and transform code. Developers can use AI assistance to understand unfamiliar code, refactor existing code, fix coding problems, and generate tests. The platform reached general availability in January 2026.

The Agent Platform can work with foundational, custom, and external agents. This allows organizations to use prebuilt capabilities as well as customize AI agents for specialized development processes. Agents can work with project context and perform tasks across the software lifecycle.

GitLab Duo also supports AI flows for multi-step automation. Teams can chain agents and actions together to automate more complex workflows rather than requiring developers to manually execute every step. This provides a foundation for agentic DevSecOps processes.

The platform can provide AI agents with deeper understanding of repositories through structured codebase representations. GitLab’s documentation describes capabilities that help AI systems understand code and repository context, allowing responses and actions to be more closely aligned with the actual project.

GitLab Duo can also connect AI to external tools and data sources. This makes it possible to incorporate information beyond a GitLab project when building agentic workflows. GitLab provides mechanisms for connecting agents to external systems and customizing their capabilities.

Organizations can customize GitLab Duo according to their development standards, workflows, and governance requirements. Administrators can control availability at the group, subgroup, project, or instance level, depending on the deployment.

GitLab Duo is available across GitLab.com, GitLab Self-Managed, and GitLab Dedicated, with individual features and add-ons varying according to the deployment and subscription tier. This makes the platform suitable for organizations that need either cloud-hosted or self-managed GitLab environments.

The platform supports Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, and Visual Studio, in addition to the GitLab web interface. This allows developers to access AI assistance without having to move away from their preferred development environment.

GitLab Duo also provides capabilities for planning and project management. AI can summarize discussions, help generate planning descriptions, summarize merge requests, populate merge-request templates, and assist teams in understanding project information. GitLab’s early Duo releases included a range of AI capabilities intended to reduce repetitive work throughout the development process.

GitLab has also introduced usage-based GitLab Credits for the Duo Agent Platform and certain other AI capabilities. GitLab Credits are separate from the seat-based pricing used by GitLab Duo Pro and Enterprise. Usage depends on the AI feature and model being used.

GitLab Duo Pro and Enterprise are seat-based add-ons and do not consume GitLab Credits for their associated Duo features. GitLab Duo Agent Platform, by contrast, uses GitLab Credits for usage-based capabilities.

GitLab also offers GitLab Duo trials. The current documentation states that trials can last 30 days for users on the GitLab.com Free tier and 60 days for users on Premium or Ultimate, depending on the applicable Duo add-on and trial configuration.

GitLab Duo is particularly suited to software engineering, DevSecOps, application security, platform engineering, and development teams that already use GitLab. Its main advantage is that AI capabilities are integrated into the same environment used for source control, issues, merge requests, CI/CD, security, and project management.

Pricing

GitLab Duo uses a mixed pricing model consisting of subscription-based add-ons and usage-based GitLab Credits.

GitLab Duo Core is included with GitLab Premium and Ultimate subscriptions. GitLab Duo Pro and Enterprise are paid add-ons with seat-based pricing, while the newer Duo Agent Platform uses GitLab Credits for usage-based features.

GitLab previously announced Duo Pro at $19 per user/month and Duo Enterprise at $39 per user/month. These historical published prices should not automatically be treated as the current commercial price because GitLab’s packaging and pricing have evolved alongside the Agent Platform and GitLab Credits.

GitLab Duo is a strong AI platform for organizations that want to incorporate AI into software development and DevSecOps rather than using a standalone coding assistant.

Its biggest advantage is the depth of integration with GitLab. Developers can use AI for coding, testing, code review, security analysis, issue management, planning, and CI/CD-related workflows without moving their development process into a separate AI platform.

The expansion into the GitLab Duo Agent Platform makes the product significantly more capable than its original code-assistant offering. Teams can now delegate tasks to agents, create custom agents, automate multi-step workflows, and connect AI to external tools and data.

The security integration is another important strength. Because GitLab already combines source control, CI/CD, and DevSecOps capabilities, Duo can apply AI assistance in contexts where security findings, vulnerabilities, merge requests, and code changes are already available.

IDE support is also broad, with integrations for VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, and Visual Studio. This gives developers flexibility while keeping GitLab as the central development platform.

The main drawback is pricing and product complexity. GitLab Duo now includes Core, Pro, Enterprise, and Agent Platform capabilities, with some features covered by subscriptions and others consuming GitLab Credits. Organizations therefore need to understand both seat-based and usage-based billing.
