Google Gemini Code Assist is an AI-powered coding assistant from Google that helps developers write, understand, transform, debug, test, and document software. Gemini Code Assist evolved from Duet AI for Developers, which Google renamed Gemini Code Assist in April 2024. The underlying developer-assistance product was already generally available as Duet AI in 2023, making 2024 the appropriate launch year for Gemini Code Assist under its current name.

The platform provides code completion and generation directly inside supported IDEs. Developers can receive suggestions as they type or ask Gemini to generate complete functions and code blocks using natural-language instructions. It can also transform existing code, explain code, generate documentation, troubleshoot errors, and create unit tests.

Gemini Code Assist includes a natural-language chat interface within supported development environments. Developers can ask questions about their code, programming concepts, libraries, development practices, or their current project without leaving the IDE.

Gemini Code Assist supports popular development environments including Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Android Studio, Cloud Workstations, and Cloud Shell Editor. JetBrains support includes environments such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, GoLand, and WebStorm.

The service supports a wide range of programming languages. Google verifies assistance quality for a subset of languages, while its underlying Gemini models can understand many additional programming languages. Verified language support includes languages such as C, C++, C#, Go, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, PHP, Python, Rust, TypeScript, and SQL.

Enterprise users also receive security and governance capabilities. Google states that customer code, inputs, and generated recommendations are not used to train shared models or develop products. Enterprise capabilities include IAM controls, Private Google Access, VPC Service Controls, and other security features. Gemini Code Assist also provides source citations when responses directly quote material from sources.

Gemini Code Assist has also added usage metrics and observability for organizations. Administrators can monitor developer activity, code suggestions, acceptance rates, chat activity, and lines of code accepted, helping organizations evaluate adoption and productivity.

Pricing is based on per-user monthly licensing for Standard and Enterprise editions. The current published price is $22.80 per user/month for Standard on monthly billing or $19 per user/month with an annual commitment. Enterprise costs $54 per user/month monthly or $45 per user/month with an annual commitment.

The current product is therefore primarily positioned as an enterprise AI coding and development platform, combining coding assistance, agentic development, Google Cloud integration, repository context, security, and developer productivity tools.

Its biggest strength is its breadth of development assistance. It can generate and complete code, explain existing code, create tests, troubleshoot problems, transform code, answer technical questions, and assist with documentation.

The addition of agent mode makes the product more capable for complex development tasks. Developers can give Gemini broader objectives and allow it to work across multiple files and tools while maintaining human oversight.

Its integration with Google Cloud is another major advantage. Firebase, BigQuery, Apigee, Application Integration, Cloud Workstations, Cloud Shell, and other Google services give developers access to AI assistance throughout a wider development workflow rather than only inside an IDE.

Enterprise users also benefit from private-code customization, governance, security controls, source citations, and usage analytics. These features make Gemini Code Assist particularly suitable for organizations that need more control than a consumer coding assistant provides.

The main drawback is that the product can be more expensive and complex for smaller teams than simpler coding assistants. Enterprise functionality also requires Google Cloud administration, licensing, and configuration.

Another consideration is that Google has changed its consumer offering. Individual Gemini Code Assist IDE and CLI access was discontinued in June 2026, so the current product is primarily focused on Standard and Enterprise business customers.
