Mem AI

Mem AI is an AI-powered knowledge management, note-taking, and personal productivity platform developed by Mem Labs, Inc. It is designed to help users capture ideas, meeting notes, research, tasks, and other information while using AI to organize, retrieve, connect, and act on that information. Mem describes the product as an AI thought partner, with its current platform combining a workspace for notes and knowledge with Mem Agent, proactive task and project tracking, Voice Mode, connected sources, and AI-powered search.

Mem was founded in 2019 by Kevin Moody and Dennis Xu. The founders initially focused on the problem of information becoming disconnected between different contexts and developed Mem around the idea of a self-organizing knowledge system. The company began publicly developing its AI-powered note-taking platform in the early 2020s.

The central idea behind Mem is that users should be able to capture information without spending significant time maintaining a complicated filing system. Instead of requiring every note to be manually categorized into folders, Mem automatically connects related information and makes it searchable through its AI capabilities.

One of Mem’s major current features is Mem Agent. The Agent can use information stored in a user’s notes and connected sources to help track tasks, projects, follow-ups, and other pieces of work. It can proactively bring relevant information back to the user instead of requiring them to remember where something was stored or manually search through previous notes.

Mem Agent can also work with Custom Routines. These routines allow users to schedule recurring AI tasks such as preparing briefings, performing research, organizing notes, or sending reminders. For example, a user can configure a routine to prepare a recurring report or briefing based on information already available in Mem. Custom Routines are available on Pro and higher-capacity plans.

Another important component is Voice Mode. Users can speak naturally while Mem records, transcribes, and organizes the conversation into a structured note. Voice Mode can be used for brainstorming, personal thought capture, meeting notes, or other situations where typing would interrupt the user’s workflow. Mem can clean up unstructured speech and turn it into an organized note while keeping the original recording and transcript attached.

Mem can also function as an AI meeting assistant. Its Mac and Windows applications can capture both microphone and system audio on supported devices, allowing it to record and transcribe meetings without joining a video call as a visible meeting bot. It can work alongside Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Slack calls.

Mem’s Calendar Integration connects with Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook. Calendar information can be used to prepare meeting notes, display upcoming meetings, provide desktop notifications, and automatically attach event information to notes. Mem can also detect some ad hoc calls and prompt users to begin a Voice Mode note.

The platform also provides Deep Search, allowing users to retrieve information from their accumulated knowledge rather than relying only on conventional keyword-based note organization. Mem is designed around contextual retrieval, so information can be connected across different notes and collections.

Mem’s workspace supports Collections, which provide a way to group related notes while retaining Mem’s flexible knowledge structure. Users can manually add notes to collections or ask Mem to organize groups of notes. The platform also provides Heads Up, which surfaces related people, projects, decisions, timelines, and collections alongside a note.

Mem also provides AI-powered note refinement. Users can capture rough thoughts and then ask Mem to clean them up, structure them, summarize them, or turn them into more useful notes. This is useful for transforming unstructured ideas into project plans, meeting summaries, task lists, or organized reference material.

For developers and advanced users, Mem provides both a REST API and MCP server. The API allows developers to programmatically work with Mem notes, while MCP allows compatible AI assistants to access and interact with a user’s Mem knowledge base. Mem specifically documents workflows involving AI assistants such as Claude and other MCP-compatible tools.

Mem’s current connected-AI approach allows users to bring their Mem context into Claude and ChatGPT through MCP. This can allow an AI assistant to search Mem notes, create notes, and use existing knowledge without requiring users to repeatedly copy and paste information between applications.

The platform is available across Web, iOS, Mac, and Windows. The desktop applications provide deeper system-level capture capabilities, including Push-to-Remember and Voice Mode.

Privacy is also an important part of Mem’s current positioning. Mem states that data is encrypted at rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS, does not sell user data, and does not mine user data to serve advertisements. Its Trust Center currently states that Mem is SOC 2 Type II certified. Mem also explains that its MCP integrations are subject to the same privacy protections and that integration queries are not used to train AI models.

Mem’s current pricing structure is based on monthly usage allowances rather than unlimited access. The Free plan includes 25 messages to Mem, 25 new notes per month, task and project tracking for up to 25 notes, 15 open tasks and projects, and three hours of Voice Mode. Paid plans increase these allowances and introduce capabilities such as Custom Routines and external Connections.

Mem is therefore best suited to individuals and knowledge workers who want a persistent AI-powered memory system that can capture information, connect related knowledge, retrieve past context, track follow-ups, summarize meetings, and interact with other AI tools.

Pricing

Mem currently offers a Free plan, Mem Plus at $9/month, and Mem Pro at $29/month. Higher-capacity Pro plans are available at $49/month, $99/month, $149/month, and $199/month, providing progressively larger allowances for messages, notes, active tasks and projects, Custom Routines, Connections, and Voice Mode.

The Free plan includes 25 Messages to Mem, 25 new notes per month, tracking across up to 25 notes, 15 open tasks and projects, and three hours of Voice Mode.

Mem Plus increases the allowances to 50 messages, 50 new notes, 25 open tasks and projects, and 10 hours of Voice Mode.

Mem Pro at $29/month provides 100 messages, 100 new notes, tracking across 100 notes, 50 open tasks and projects, one Custom Routine, one Connection, and 25 hours of Voice Mode.

Mem also provides Extra Usage for Pro 20× users. Each additional $50/month usage unit adds 500 messages, 500 new notes, tracking for 500 notes, 250 open tasks and projects, five Custom Routines, five Connections, and 125 Voice Mode hours.

Review

Mem’s main strength is its focus on persistent personal context. Instead of treating each AI interaction as an isolated conversation, Mem builds an evolving knowledge base from the user’s notes, meetings, ideas, research, and connected information.

Mem Agent extends this concept by actively tracking tasks and projects and bringing relevant information back to the user. This makes the platform different from traditional note-taking applications that primarily depend on folders, tags, or manual organization.

Voice Mode is another useful feature because it allows users to capture information without typing. Its ability to structure spoken thoughts and meeting discussions into notes can be useful for meetings, brainstorming, research, and personal knowledge capture.

The API and MCP support also make Mem more flexible than a closed note-taking application. Developers can build custom workflows around Mem, while users can connect their knowledge base to compatible AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT.

The main limitation is the usage-based capacity system. The Free and lower-cost plans impose limits on messages, new notes, tracked tasks and projects, and Voice Mode hours. Users with heavier workloads may need one of the more expensive Pro tiers or additional usage.

Another limitation is language coverage for Voice Mode. Mem currently states that its AI transcription engine is optimized exclusively for English, so multilingual users should not assume that meeting transcription has the same level of support across other languages.

Mem is therefore particularly suited to users who want an AI-powered personal knowledge system rather than a conventional notes application. Its combination of contextual memory, proactive task tracking, voice capture, meeting transcription, connected sources, API access, and MCP makes it useful for knowledge-intensive workflows.
