Napkin AI is an AI-powered visual communication platform that transforms written ideas, notes, documents, and data into editable visual content. Instead of requiring users to design diagrams, infographics, flowcharts, mind maps, or other business graphics manually, Napkin analyzes written content and recommends visual representations that communicate the underlying ideas more clearly.
The platform is built around a text-first workflow. Users can write directly in Napkin, paste existing content, or import files, and then use Napkin’s visual-generation tools to transform selected content into graphics. The system analyzes the meaning and structure of the text and generates visual options that users can select, customize, and edit. This makes Napkin different from traditional design software, where users generally start by choosing a canvas, template, or visual framework.
Napkin Visuals is the core product. It can transform written information into diagrams, flowcharts, mind maps, infographics, data charts, and other structured visuals. Users do not need to write complex prompts for basic visual generation; they can work from the text they have already written and use the generation controls within the document. Generated visuals remain editable, allowing users to change layouts, colors, fonts, icons, shapes, and other elements.
Napkin also supports AI-powered data charting. Users can provide numerical information and allow Napkin to identify suitable chart types and generate visual representations of the data. This makes the platform useful not only for conceptual diagrams but also for communicating quantitative information in presentations, reports, and business documents. Napkin’s product updates show continued development of AI data-charting capabilities.
The platform provides a large collection of visual designs and styles. Users can select different visual treatments and customize the appearance of generated graphics. Custom Styles allow users to establish brand colors and fonts, while Pro users can create unlimited custom branding and upload their own fonts. Napkin has also expanded its design library and introduced Effects that can transform the appearance of visuals while preserving their underlying content and structure.
Napkin’s editing capabilities are an important part of the product. AI-generated visuals are not intended to be locked final images. Users can modify individual elements, change layouts, edit text, adjust colors, swap icons, and restructure visual components. More advanced editing features allow users to ungroup and rebuild visual elements, giving them considerably more control over the final result.
Napkin has also expanded into presentation creation through Napkin Slides. Slides uses the same visual intelligence to create complete presentation decks from a user’s ideas and content. The product is designed to help users shape their narrative first and then generate presentation layouts and visuals around that narrative. Users can edit slides after generation and export them for use in other presentation software. Napkin Slides entered beta in 2026 and is included within the same Free, Plus, and Pro subscriptions as Napkin Visuals.
Import and export capabilities make Napkin useful within existing content workflows. Users can import PowerPoint, Word-compatible documents, PDF, HTML, and Markdown files. Generated visuals can be exported as PNG, PDF, PowerPoint, or SVG, depending on the plan and export limits. This makes it possible to use Napkin alongside PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, Canva, Notion, Word, and other applications rather than requiring users to replace their existing tools.
Napkin is also designed for collaborative work. Teams can use shared Teamspaces, collaborate on documents, edit visuals together, and leave comments or highlights for feedback. Paid plans provide team-management and billing capabilities, while higher-tier plans provide additional branding and organizational functionality.
Another major development is the Napkin API. The API allows developers to programmatically turn text into diagrams, illustrations, charts, and other visuals. It supports multiple visual styles, custom styles, SVG, PNG, and PowerPoint output, variation generation, context-aware visual generation, and customization such as transparent backgrounds and dimension controls. API access is available across Napkin plans, with usage consuming credits and being subject to plan-based rate limits.
The API makes Napkin relevant beyond individual content creation. Developers can integrate visual generation into educational applications, documentation systems, AI assistants, note-taking applications, content-generation workflows, and other software products. Napkin specifically identifies learning tools, AI assistants, and note-taking applications as examples of systems that can benefit from automated visual generation. It can also connect to workflow platforms such as Make and n8n.
Napkin supports multilingual visual creation. Its current website states that users can create visuals and presentations in more than 60 languages. The Help Center separately explains that the Napkin interface itself is currently available in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Korean, and Portuguese. This distinction is important because the number of languages supported for generated content is much larger than the number of languages supported by the user interface.
Security and responsible AI are also part of the platform’s current positioning. Napkin’s AI transparency documentation warns that AI-generated material can be inaccurate or misleading and should be reviewed before being relied upon or published. Its current data-processing documentation identifies Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic as AI inference subprocessors and states that Napkin does not permit those providers to use customer personal data to train or improve their general-purpose models.
Napkin AI was publicly launched on August 7, 2024, when the company emerged from stealth with a $10 million seed round led by Accel and CRV. The founders, Pramod Sharma and Jerome Scholler, previously co-founded the educational technology company Osmo. Napkin’s own history explains that the product evolved from earlier attempts at AI-assisted digital sketching and visual frameworks before the team adopted a text-first approach using large language models.
Napkin AI is therefore best understood as a visual communication and storytelling platform, rather than a conventional image generator. Its strongest use case is turning information that already exists in written form into structured, editable visuals that can be used in presentations, reports, educational materials, business communications, social content, documentation, and other professional contexts.
Napkin AI currently offers Free, Plus, and Pro plans, with an Enterprise option available through the sales team. The Free plan costs $0 and includes 500 AI credits per week, unlimited visual editing, unlimited file imports, unlimited PNG and PDF exports, built-in styles and fonts, and standard icons. Free exports include Napkin branding.
The Plus plan costs $9 per person per month when billed annually. It includes 10,000 AI credits per month, unlimited PPT and SVG exports, three brand styles, bold icons, removal of Napkin branding, and team management and billing. The Pro plan costs $22 per person per month when billed annually and includes 30,000 AI credits per month, exclusive designs, unlimited custom branding, font uploads, and optional credit top-ups. Annual billing provides a 25% saving compared with monthly billing.
Napkin AI is particularly effective for users who already know what they want to communicate but struggle with turning written information into clear visuals. Its text-first workflow removes much of the complexity associated with traditional diagramming and design tools.
The biggest advantage is the relationship between text and visuals. Instead of generating an unrelated decorative image, Napkin is designed to understand the information in the user’s text and represent that information through diagrams, charts, flowcharts, mind maps, and other structured graphics. This makes it particularly useful for business communication, education, documentation, research, and presentations.
Editability is another major strength. Generated visuals can be customized after creation rather than being treated as finished images. Users can modify colors, fonts, icons, layouts, and individual elements, which makes the results more practical for professional documents and branded communications.
Napkin Slides also broadens the platform’s usefulness. Users can now move from written ideas to complete presentation decks within the same ecosystem, while maintaining control over the narrative and individual slide elements.
The API is particularly valuable for developers and businesses that want visual generation inside their own products or workflows. Since API access is available on all plans and supports SVG, PNG, and PowerPoint outputs, organizations can incorporate Napkin-generated visuals into applications, content pipelines, educational products, and AI assistants.
There are some limitations. Napkin is focused primarily on information visualization and visual storytelling rather than unrestricted image generation. Users seeking photorealistic artwork, advanced image editing, or general-purpose graphic design may need another platform.
AI credits also limit generation volume. Free users receive 500 credits weekly, while Plus and Pro use monthly allocations. Credits are consumed when generating new visuals or applying visual effects, although editing existing content does not consume credits. Included subscription credits do not roll over, while purchased top-up credits do.
The interface is also more limited linguistically than the generated-content capability. While visuals can be produced in 60+ languages, the current interface supports six languages.
Napkin AI is therefore a strong choice for business professionals, educators, researchers, marketers, consultants, content creators, students, and teams that need to communicate written ideas visually without spending large amounts of time manually designing diagrams and presentation graphics.
