Pieces Copilot

Pieces Copilot is an AI-powered coding and workflow assistant from Pieces designed specifically for developers. Rather than focusing only on generating code inside an IDE, Pieces Copilot combines AI assistance with long-term workflow memory, reusable developer materials, and contextual information gathered from across a developer’s tools.

Pieces describes its platform around three core components: Pieces Copilot, Pieces Drive, and its Long-Term Memory Engine. Pieces Copilot provides AI assistance for generating and understanding code, answering technical questions, troubleshooting problems, and adding code comments, while Pieces Drive stores and organizes reusable developer materials such as code snippets. The Long-Term Memory Engine helps preserve workflow context across sessions and applications.

A major differentiator is Pieces Copilot’s emphasis on context. Developers can provide files, folders, repositories, snippets, websites, screenshots, and other materials as context for conversations. This allows the assistant to reason about a project or workflow rather than relying only on the text contained in a single prompt. Pieces also introduced Live Context, which allows Copilot to use relevant information from a developer’s activity across supported applications and tools.

Pieces Copilot supports both cloud and local AI models. Developers can select different LLM runtimes depending on their requirements, including models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Meta, IBM, Mistral, and others. Pieces documentation says its JetBrains integration supports more than 54 cloud and local models, while local models can enable completely offline AI assistance.

The platform is also designed around privacy and local processing. PiecesOS acts as the underlying local service for the Pieces suite, and Pieces states that data, machine-learning processes, and inter-application communication can remain on-device. Users can configure local, cloud, or blended processing depending on their workflow.

Within development environments, Copilot can generate code, explain selected code, modify or transform code, troubleshoot errors, generate comments and documentation, and answer questions about an active file or broader project context. The VS Code extension, for example, allows developers to add files, folders, or entire repositories to a Copilot conversation.

Pieces Copilot also works alongside Pieces Drive, allowing developers to save useful code snippets and later search, reuse, share, or add those materials to Copilot context. AI-generated metadata such as tags, titles, descriptions, and classifications can make large collections of saved materials easier to retrieve.

The platform extends beyond traditional IDE use. Pieces provides integrations and plugins for environments including Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, Sublime Text, JupyterLab, Neovim, Obsidian, Raycast, and other developer workflows. Pieces also provides an MCP server that allows compatible AI clients such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot to access Pieces’ long-term memory and workflow context.

Pieces Copilot was introduced publicly in August 2023, while Pieces’ broader product development began earlier. Pieces states that its first phase began in late 2020, its first-generation Copilot appeared in late 2022, and Pieces Copilot+ with Live Context was introduced in 2023.

Pricing

Pieces has offered its core developer productivity experience with a free option, while some cloud, collaboration, and advanced capabilities may depend on the user’s account, plan, or connected services.

The company has also positioned Pieces Copilot+ and its on-device AI capabilities as available for free, while continuing to develop team and enterprise capabilities. Because Pieces’ product and plan structure has changed over time, pricing should be checked on the current official pricing page before publishing a specific dollar amount.

Pricing Model: Freemium / subscription for selected advanced capabilities

Pricing Note: Core Pieces developer tooling and on-device Copilot functionality are available at no cost, while certain cloud, team, enterprise, or advanced capabilities may require paid access. Pricing and included features can change as Pieces updates its product plans.

Review

Pieces Copilot stands out from conventional AI coding assistants because it is designed around developer memory and workflow context, not simply autocomplete. Its combination of Copilot, Pieces Drive, and Long-Term Memory can be particularly useful for developers who frequently revisit old projects, research, code snippets, conversations, and technical decisions.

The ability to select between local and cloud models is another significant advantage. Developers who prioritize privacy or need offline functionality can use local models, while those who want access to larger cloud models can choose supported cloud runtimes.

Its broad integration strategy is also useful. Pieces can operate inside multiple IDEs and developer applications, while its MCP server allows its long-term memory to be used by external AI coding tools such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot.

The main drawback is that Pieces can feel more complex than a straightforward coding assistant because its full experience involves PiecesOS, Pieces Drive, Copilot, memory, plugins, and model configuration. Developers who only want simple inline code completion may prefer a more focused coding assistant.

For developers who want AI assistance that remembers their workflow, organizes reusable code, and provides context-aware help across development tools, Pieces Copilot offers a broader approach than conventional IDE-only copilots.
