Sourcegraph Cody

Sourcegraph Cody is an AI-powered coding assistant designed to help developers understand, write, edit, debug, and maintain software. It combines large language models with Sourcegraph’s code intelligence capabilities, allowing Cody to use relevant context from a developer’s codebase when generating answers and code.

Cody was designed to address one of the major challenges of AI coding assistants: understanding large and complex codebases. Instead of relying only on the contents of the currently open file, Cody can use Sourcegraph’s code search and intelligence capabilities to retrieve relevant code, symbols, APIs, and usage patterns from local and remote repositories. This allows its responses to be grounded in a broader understanding of the software being developed.

Cody provides an AI-powered developer chat experience where developers can ask questions about their code, request explanations, generate new code, edit existing code, and troubleshoot problems. Developers can also add specific files, symbols, repositories, and other context to their prompts using Cody’s context controls.

Another core capability is code completion. Cody can generate inline suggestions while developers write code, including whole-line and multi-line completions. These suggestions are intended to reduce repetitive programming work and help developers move faster through common coding tasks.

Cody also supports code editing. Developers can use Quick Edit or the Chat Panel Edit mode to request changes to existing code. Its Auto-edit functionality can suggest changes based on cursor movement and typing behavior.

The platform provides debugging assistance as well. Developers can ask Cody to identify potential problems, explain errors, and suggest fixes. This makes it useful during development and maintenance when engineers need to understand unfamiliar or problematic code.

Cody includes a Prompt Library with reusable and customizable prompts. These can automate recurring development tasks and give teams a consistent way to perform common workflows.

Cody also supports Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling connections to external context and tools through MCP servers. This expands the types of information and capabilities that can be incorporated into AI-assisted development workflows.

A significant feature for enterprise teams is codebase context. Sourcegraph’s underlying platform can search across repositories and retrieve relevant information while enforcing repository permissions. Cody therefore can provide context from code that the user is authorized to access without simply exposing unrelated repositories or restricted information.

Cody can be used through several development environments. Sourcegraph documents support for Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, the Sourcegraph web application, and the Cody CLI. Visual Studio support is documented as experimental.

Cody also works with major code hosts including GitHub and GitLab. This allows organizations to connect their development repositories and use Sourcegraph’s code intelligence capabilities alongside their existing development infrastructure.

For enterprise deployments, Cody provides additional administrative capabilities. These include access controls, analytics, supported LLM configuration, enterprise authentication options, and other organizational controls. Sourcegraph also supports Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) for Cody Enterprise.

Cody supports multiple LLM providers and models in enterprise environments. Sourcegraph documentation identifies providers such as Anthropic and OpenAI, with model availability depending on the Sourcegraph configuration and deployment.

One important change to Cody’s product history occurred in 2025. Sourcegraph discontinued Cody Free, Cody Pro, and Enterprise Starter access beginning July 23, 2025. Existing Enterprise customers were not affected, and Sourcegraph stated that it would continue investing in Cody Enterprise. Sourcegraph introduced Amp as its newer AI coding tool for users who previously used Cody Free or Pro.

This means Cody is now best understood as an enterprise-focused AI coding assistant, rather than a general-purpose consumer coding assistant with a free tier.

Review

Sourcegraph Cody is particularly strong for organizations working with large, complex, or multi-repository codebases. Its biggest differentiator is its connection to Sourcegraph’s code intelligence platform, which allows Cody to retrieve relevant context instead of relying solely on the code currently visible in an editor.

The contextual approach makes Cody useful for understanding unfamiliar systems, tracing how APIs and symbols are used, explaining existing implementations, debugging problems, and making changes across larger codebases.

Cody also provides a broad set of developer-assistance features, including chat, code completion, editing, prompts, debugging, and MCP support. Developers can use it from popular IDEs as well as the Sourcegraph web interface and CLI.

Its enterprise capabilities are another strength. Sourcegraph provides administrative controls, analytics, authentication options, model configuration, and enterprise deployment capabilities. BYOK is also supported for Enterprise customers.

The biggest limitation is the product’s current availability and pricing structure. Cody is no longer offered as the broadly accessible Free or Pro coding assistant that it once was. Sourcegraph discontinued those plans in 2025 and has focused Cody development on Enterprise customers.

Another consideration is that Cody depends on Sourcegraph for important code-context and LLM-proxy functionality. This makes it especially valuable for organizations already using Sourcegraph, but potentially less attractive to developers looking for a lightweight standalone coding assistant.

For enterprise engineering teams that need AI assistance grounded in large codebases, strong repository context, and organizational controls, Cody remains a capable solution.
