HuggingChat is an AI chat application from Hugging Face that provides a single conversational interface for interacting with open-source and open-weight AI models. Unlike services built around one proprietary model family, HuggingChat allows users to select from available models or let its Omni routing system automatically choose a suitable model for the request. The current HuggingChat interface describes Omni as a system that automatically selects the best available model based on the user’s task.
HuggingChat was originally launched in April 2023 as an open-source alternative to ChatGPT and as a way to demonstrate the capabilities of the Hugging Face ecosystem. The original service was intentionally free and experimental. After being temporarily closed in July 2025, HuggingChat returned in October 2025 with HuggingChat Omni, a redesigned experience integrated more closely with Hugging Face’s Inference Providers.
The current version is built around model choice and intelligent routing. Hugging Face’s October 2025 announcement described HuggingChat Omni as providing access to 115+ models from 15+ inference providers. Instead of requiring users to understand which model is best for every request, Omni analyzes the task and routes the conversation to an appropriate model. Users can also bypass automatic routing and select an available open model directly.
This approach makes HuggingChat particularly useful for experimenting with the wider open-model ecosystem. Depending on availability, users can work with models from organizations and projects such as Qwen, DeepSeek, Meta’s Llama family, Google Gemma, Mistral, and others. The exact model catalog changes over time as models are added, updated, or removed. Hugging Face currently maintains a large model repository containing models for text generation, multimodal AI, image generation, speech, translation, coding, and numerous other machine-learning tasks.
HuggingChat also has a history of supporting AI Assistants. Assistants allow users to package a prompt, model, and configuration into a reusable conversational experience. Hugging Face introduced Assistants in 2024 and subsequently added capabilities such as internet access.
Another important part of the ecosystem is HuggingChat Tools and the broader Hugging Face Spaces ecosystem. Hugging Face Spaces provides a large collection of AI applications that can perform tasks such as image generation, video generation, speech synthesis, translation, OCR, document analysis, data visualization, coding, and other AI workloads. This gives HuggingChat users access to a much broader ecosystem than a conventional text-only chatbot.
HuggingChat is also closely connected to Hugging Face Inference Providers, which provide access to models through multiple infrastructure providers. The current Inference Providers system supports more than 200 models from multiple providers and uses centralized billing. Free Hugging Face accounts receive a small amount of monthly inference credit, while PRO users receive substantially more included credits and can purchase additional usage when needed.
For developers, the underlying Chat UI project is open source. Hugging Face describes Chat UI as an open-source chat interface supporting tools, multimodal inputs, and intelligent model routing. It can connect to Hugging Face Inference Providers as well as OpenAI-compatible services, Ollama, llama.cpp, OpenRouter, and other compatible endpoints. This means developers can deploy and customize their own instance rather than relying exclusively on the hosted HuggingChat interface.
Chat UI also supports Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools. MCP enables compatible AI systems to call external tools and services, extending the capabilities of the chat interface beyond basic text generation. Hugging Face’s broader agent ecosystem similarly allows AI agents to search models, explore datasets, run Spaces, and use community tools through MCP and other open-source technologies.
Multimodal capabilities depend on the model selected. Because HuggingChat is a multi-model interface rather than a single foundation model, users may encounter models capable of processing text, images, audio, or other inputs. The broader Hugging Face Hub supports models across text, image, video, audio, speech, vision, and other machine-learning tasks.
Pricing is somewhat different from a conventional AI chatbot subscription. HuggingChat itself is available to Hugging Face users, while inference usage is connected to Hugging Face’s credit and provider system. Free users receive monthly inference credits, and Hugging Face PRO currently costs $9 per month and includes 20× the included inference credits of the free account. Additional inference can be purchased on a pay-as-you-go basis.
HuggingChat’s biggest advantage is therefore its breadth and flexibility. Users can experiment with numerous AI models from a single interface, compare different models, use automatic routing, and benefit from the wider Hugging Face ecosystem. Developers can also use the open-source Chat UI codebase to build their own AI chat applications and connect them to compatible model providers and tools.
However, the multi-model structure also means that HuggingChat does not provide one consistent model experience. Responses, context limits, capabilities, speed, and multimodal features can vary depending on the model and inference provider selected. Availability can also change as Hugging Face updates its model catalog. This is an important distinction when comparing HuggingChat with AI assistants centered on a single model family.
Overall, HuggingChat is best described as a multi-model AI chat platform built around the Hugging Face open-source ecosystem. Its combination of model selection, automatic routing, inference providers, open-source Chat UI, AI tools, and access to a large community model ecosystem makes it particularly useful for exploring and working with different AI models from one interface.
