Snowflake Cortex

Snowflake Cortex is a suite of fully managed AI capabilities built directly into the Snowflake platform. It allows organizations to use large language models, AI functions, search, analytics, and AI agents alongside their enterprise data without having to move that data into a separate AI environment. Snowflake positions Cortex AI as a way to turn conversations, documents, images, and other data into insights while keeping AI workloads within Snowflake’s security and governance perimeter.

Snowflake announced Cortex in November 2023, initially as a private-preview service providing access to large language models, AI models, and vector search. The platform was designed to make generative AI more accessible to Snowflake users while allowing organizations to work with their enterprise data in the same environment.

Cortex has since expanded into a broader collection of AI services. Its current capabilities include Cortex AI Functions, Cortex Agents, Cortex Analyst, Cortex Search, Cortex REST API, AI document processing, and access to multiple foundation models. These capabilities can be used independently or combined to create more sophisticated AI applications and agentic workflows.

One of the platform’s main advantages is that AI can be applied directly to data stored in Snowflake. Developers and data teams can use SQL functions to analyze text, images, and other multimodal information, while applications can access Cortex capabilities through APIs. This allows organizations to add AI-powered processing to existing data pipelines without building separate infrastructure for every AI task.

Cortex AI Functions provide task-specific capabilities such as classification, extraction, sentiment analysis, summarization, translation, embedding generation, similarity analysis, filtering, aggregation, and transcription. Snowflake’s current documentation states that these functions can process text and images and, for applicable functions, audio and video as well. Cortex Analyst is designed for conversational analytics. Business users can ask questions about structured Snowflake data in natural language instead of manually writing SQL queries. Analyst converts natural-language questions into SQL and runs the resulting queries against Snowflake. It can also be exposed through a REST API and integrated into applications such as Streamlit apps, Slack, Teams, and custom interfaces.

Cortex Search provides low-latency search over enterprise data and can be used as part of retrieval-augmented generation applications. Cortex also includes Cortex Agents, which can orchestrate access to structured and unstructured data. Additional tools, including custom tools and MCP-based connections, can extend what agents can do.

For developers who want to build applications outside the Snowflake interface, the Cortex REST API provides access to supported models through industry-standard API formats. Snowflake currently provides compatibility with the OpenAI Chat Completions API and Anthropic Messages API. The REST API supports models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek, and Snowflake, subject to availability.

Another important characteristic is Snowflake’s emphasis on governance. Cortex AI runs within Snowflake’s security and governance environment, allowing organizations to use existing access controls and policies around their data. Snowflake also provides AI observability and cost-management capabilities so organizations can monitor AI usage and associated consumption.

Cortex is also designed for multimodal workloads. AI capabilities can be applied to documents, text, images, audio, and video depending on the function and model. For example, AI_TRANSCRIBE can process supported audio and video files, while AI_COMPLETE can work with vision-capable models for image analysis.

Snowflake has increasingly positioned Cortex as part of its broader AI Data Cloud, where data engineering, analytics, AI, applications, and governance operate together. The platform can therefore appeal to organizations that already use Snowflake as their central data platform and want to introduce generative AI without creating a separate data architecture.

Snowflake Cortex uses a consumption-based AI Credit pricing model. AI Credits are separate from Snowflake Platform Credits and are used for Cortex AI features. Snowflake states that there are no per-seat fees for these AI services and that costs scale according to usage.

The current AI Credit price is $2.00 per AI Credit for global routing and $2.20 per AI Credit for regional routing. Individual Cortex features then consume credits according to their applicable consumption rates.

For example, Cortex AI Functions are billed according to tokens processed, while Cortex Search has separate serving and embedding costs. Cortex Agents are billed according to token consumption and can generate additional costs when they invoke other services such as Cortex Analyst, Cortex Search, custom tools, or warehouse compute.

Snowflake also offers a free trial/start-for-free option for the broader Snowflake platform, but Cortex AI usage itself is not a permanently free service.
