Amazon DevOps Guru is a machine-learning-powered cloud operations service from Amazon Web Services (AWS) designed to help development and operations teams improve application availability, reliability, and performance. It automatically analyzes operational data such as application metrics, logs, events, and other signals to identify behavior that deviates from normal operating patterns. When it detects an operational problem or potential risk, DevOps Guru generates an insight containing relevant information, related metrics and events, and recommendations that can help teams investigate and remediate the issue.
DevOps Guru is designed to reduce the amount of manual monitoring required in cloud environments. Instead of relying exclusively on static thresholds and manually configured alarms, its machine-learning models look for unusual application behavior and operational patterns. AWS says its models are informed by years of operational experience from Amazon.com and AWS.
The service can identify issues such as increased latency, elevated error rates, resource constraints, database-related problems, and other abnormal behaviors. It provides both reactive insights for issues that are already occurring and proactive insights intended to help identify potential operational problems before they affect applications.
DevOps Guru works closely with the AWS monitoring and management ecosystem. It analyzes Amazon CloudWatch metrics and log information, AWS CloudTrail events, and, where configured, deployment events from AWS CodeDeploy. It can use AWS CloudFormation stacks or AWS tags to determine which resources should be monitored.
For incident notification and response, DevOps Guru can send notifications through Amazon SNS and Amazon EventBridge and can create OpsItems in AWS Systems Manager OpsCenter. AWS also documents integrations with incident-management platforms such as PagerDuty and Atlassian Opsgenie. EventBridge can be used to route DevOps Guru events and trigger automated actions such as Lambda functions, SQS queues, EC2 Run Command, and Step Functions workflows.
DevOps Guru also includes specialized capabilities for particular AWS workloads. DevOps Guru for RDS helps identify and troubleshoot operational issues involving Amazon RDS databases, while DevOps Guru for Serverless helps detect operational issues in serverless applications.
The service was introduced in public preview in December 2020 and became generally available on May 4, 2021.
Pricing
Amazon DevOps Guru uses a pay-as-you-go pricing model with no upfront commitment or minimum fee. AWS charges for two primary components: AWS resource analysis and DevOps Guru API calls.
Current published rates include:
Actual costs depend on the AWS resources being analyzed and their activity. AWS provides a DevOps Guru Cost Estimator to help calculate expected usage. Additional charges can apply for services such as Amazon SNS or AWS Systems Manager when those services are used with DevOps Guru.
Review
Amazon DevOps Guru is particularly useful for organizations already operating applications on AWS because it connects directly with AWS monitoring, logging, deployment, notification, and incident-management services. Its machine-learning approach can help teams identify abnormal behavior that may be difficult to detect through conventional threshold-based monitoring alone.
Its strongest advantage is the combination of anomaly detection, contextual insights, and remediation recommendations rather than simply notifying users that a metric has crossed a threshold. Integration with CloudWatch, CloudTrail, EventBridge, Systems Manager, CloudFormation, X-Ray, SNS, and third-party incident-management platforms makes it suitable for automated operational workflows.
The main consideration is cost management. Because DevOps Guru is usage-based, expenses increase with the number and activity of monitored resources and API usage. It is also primarily designed around AWS workloads, making it less suitable as a vendor-neutral observability platform for organizations whose environments are predominantly outside AWS. The service is best suited to teams that want AWS-native AIOps and automated operational insights rather than a general-purpose coding assistant or standalone monitoring dashboard.
