Amazon Q

Amazon Q is AWS’s generative AI assistant for software development, enterprise knowledge, business intelligence, customer service, and AWS operations. It is not a single-purpose chatbot: AWS provides Amazon Q through specialized experiences, most notably Amazon Q Developer for developers and IT professionals and Amazon Q Business for employees working with organizational information. Amazon Q is powered by Amazon Bedrock and uses multiple foundation models, with routing logic intended to select an appropriate model for different tasks.

Amazon Q Developer is focused on the software development lifecycle. Developers can use it to ask questions about AWS architecture and services, generate and update code, receive inline code suggestions, troubleshoot applications, perform security scanning, refactor and modernize code, and work on agentic coding tasks. It is available in popular development environments including Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, and Eclipse, as well as through the command line and AWS applications.

Agentic coding is one of Amazon Q Developer’s major capabilities. Instead of only suggesting individual lines of code, Amazon Q can work through larger development tasks, update files, propose shell commands, and incorporate additional instructions while it works. It can also use MCP servers in supported IDE environments, allowing developers to extend its capabilities with external tools.

Amazon Q Developer also provides security and modernization capabilities. It can scan code for security vulnerabilities, suggest fixes, review code, and assist with application transformations. AWS documents support for transformations such as Java upgrades and .NET application modernization, alongside code review capabilities for languages including Java, JavaScript, Python, C#, TypeScript, Ruby, Go, C, C++, PHP, Kotlin, Scala, and others.

Beyond development, Amazon Q can help organizations understand and work with their AWS environments. Users can ask questions about AWS resources, costs, architecture, documentation, best practices, and common problems. Amazon Q Developer can also analyze AWS cost information, form an investigation plan, gather data from billing APIs, perform calculations, and produce insights and visualizations.

Amazon Q Business is designed for employees who need answers and assistance based on an organization’s internal information. It can answer questions, summarize content, generate documents, and perform certain business tasks using enterprise data. Importantly, Amazon Q Business uses permissions-aware access, meaning responses are based on information the individual user is authorized to access.

Amazon Q Business can connect to organizational repositories and applications, allowing employees to search across business information rather than manually checking multiple systems. AWS documents connectors for sources such as Amazon S3, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Slack, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft Exchange, Google Drive, Gmail, GitHub, Jira, Confluence, Dropbox, Box, Zendesk, and Smartsheet, among others.

The platform also extends into business intelligence, customer service, and supply-chain operations. Amazon Q in QuickSight helps business users create dashboards, visualizations, calculations, data stories, and executive summaries using natural-language interaction. Amazon Q in Connect assists contact-center employees with real-time recommendations and information, while Amazon Q in AWS Supply Chain can analyze supply-chain data and provide operational and financial insights.

Security and enterprise access control are central to Amazon Q. AWS states that Amazon Q is designed to respect identities, roles, and permissions, so users cannot use Amazon Q to access information they could not otherwise access. Amazon Q also inherits security and safety controls from Amazon Bedrock. For Amazon Q Developer Pro and Amazon Q Business plans, AWS states that customer data is not used to improve underlying models for other customers.

Amazon Q supports a wide range of programming languages. Its IDE capabilities include languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, Go, Rust, PHP, Ruby, Kotlin, C, C++, Shell, SQL, Scala, Dart, Lua, Swift, and more, although individual capabilities such as transformations and code reviews have narrower language support. Amazon Q Developer also supports natural-language interaction in English plus languages including Mandarin, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, Hindi, and Portuguese.

Pricing depends on which Amazon Q product is being used. Amazon Q Developer has a perpetual Free tier and a Pro tier currently priced at $19 per user per month. The Pro tier provides higher limits and additional enterprise capabilities. Amazon Q Business has separate Lite and Pro subscription tiers and charges for index capacity as well. AWS currently lists Q Business Lite at $3 per user/month and Pro at $20 per user/month.

One important current consideration is that Amazon Q Business is no longer accepting new customers as of July 31, 2026, according to AWS documentation. AWS directs organizations looking for similar capabilities toward Amazon Quick. Existing Q Business information and capabilities therefore need to be considered in the context of this transition.

Overall, Amazon Q is best suited to organizations already using AWS or looking for an enterprise AI assistant connected to their development environments, business data, and cloud infrastructure. Its strongest areas are AI-assisted coding, agentic software development, AWS operations, enterprise knowledge retrieval, analytics, customer service, automation, and supply-chain intelligence.
