Blackbox AI

BLACKBOX AI is an AI-powered software development and inference platform designed to help developers build, modify, review, and deploy software with AI. The platform has evolved from an AI coding assistant into a broader development ecosystem that includes AI coding agents, a command-line interface, a VS Code extension, an AI model router, an OpenAI-compatible API, multi-agent workflows, and enterprise AI inference.

BLACKBOX AI was founded in 2021 and is developed by BLACKBOX AI Technologies Inc. The company originally focused on AI-assisted software development, providing developers with tools for code generation, code completion, debugging, and other programming tasks. Its current platform has expanded to support multiple AI models and autonomous development workflows.

One of BLACKBOX AI’s major capabilities is agentic coding. Its AI coding agents can work directly with software projects, understand project context, modify files, execute scripts, and perform multi-step development tasks. The BLACKBOX CLI provides a terminal-based coding agent with planning, file editing, script execution, and automation capabilities.

The CLI includes a Plan Mode that breaks complex development requests into ordered steps before changes are applied. Developers can review, modify, approve, or reject individual steps before allowing the agent to make changes. This provides greater control over autonomous coding workflows.

BLACKBOX AI also supports multi-agent development. Developers can send the same task to multiple AI coding agents, including BLACKBOX, Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, Goose, OpenCode, and Qwen. Each agent can work in its own Git worktree, allowing developers to compare different implementations. BLACKBOX’s Chairman LLM can evaluate the results and help select the preferred implementation.

The platform’s VS Code extension brings AI coding directly into the development environment. Developers can receive inline code completions, interact with an AI chat panel, describe changes using natural language, and review modifications as diffs before accepting them. The extension can use open files, imports, and project structure to provide context-aware suggestions.

BLACKBOX AI also provides an AI-native development environment that allows developers to work with AI models and coding agents across different surfaces. The current platform supports development through the terminal, VS Code, web interfaces, and other supported environments.

Another major part of the platform is the BLACKBOX Router. The Router provides a unified API endpoint for accessing more than 300 AI models. Instead of integrating separately with multiple AI providers, developers can connect to BLACKBOX through a single API and select models from its catalog. The platform supports frontier and open-source models from providers and ecosystems including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen, and others.

The Router includes smart routing, automatic failover, load balancing, and prompt caching. These capabilities are designed to help applications select suitable models and maintain availability when individual providers experience problems. BLACKBOX states that its routing infrastructure enforces zero data retention and does not use routed traffic for training.

BLACKBOX AI also provides an OpenAI-compatible API. Developers can use familiar OpenAI SDKs and request formats while changing the API endpoint and authentication key. The API supports chat completions, embeddings, image generation, streaming, function calling, JSON mode, and vision inputs. It can also be used with frameworks such as LangChain and LlamaIndex.

For organizations with strict security requirements, BLACKBOX AI offers Enterprise Inference. Organizations can select an open-weight model and have BLACKBOX deploy it on dedicated infrastructure reserved for that organization. The environment is single-tenant and isolated from other customers. Enterprise capabilities include data residency, customer-managed keys, SAML SSO, SCIM, RBAC, audit logs, custom rate limits, and dedicated support.

Security and privacy are central to BLACKBOX AI’s current positioning. The platform states that it provides end-to-end encryption and zero data retention. Enterprise deployments can also remove personally identifiable information before prompts are sent to closed models. BLACKBOX states that customer prompts are not used as a product and that training opt-out is enforced with upstream providers where supported.

The BLACKBOX CLI is also open source. It supports plugins, hooks, skills, MCP servers, AGENTS.md conventions, and headless operation. This makes it suitable for development automation and CI/CD environments. The CLI can run in Docker, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and other environments that support Node.js.

BLACKBOX AI supports a wide range of programming languages and frameworks. Its current documentation and product pages describe support for major languages including Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, Go, Rust, C++, and frontend frameworks such as React, Vue, and Angular. The platform automatically detects the language and framework used by a project.

The platform is also designed for organizations that want to consolidate access to multiple AI models. Rather than maintaining separate integrations and billing arrangements for every model provider, teams can use the BLACKBOX Router to access a broad catalog through one endpoint and one billing relationship. The current catalog contains more than 300 models.

BLACKBOX AI is therefore best suited to software developers, engineering teams, AI application developers, and enterprises that want AI-assisted coding combined with access to multiple AI models and agentic development workflows. Its combination of coding agents, IDE tooling, CLI automation, model routing, API access, and enterprise inference makes it broader than a conventional AI code-completion tool.

Pricing

BLACKBOX AI’s current pricing is token-based rather than a conventional per-seat monthly subscription.

The Pay As You Go option has a $0/month platform commitment and uses prepaid credits with metered token consumption. It provides access to the 300+ model catalog through the API, CLI, VS Code extension, and other supported surfaces. There are no platform fees, no per-seat charges, and no markup on the published model rates.

Enterprise customers can make an annual committed spend through a purchase order. Enterprise pricing is custom, with discounts applied to committed token usage. BLACKBOX states that enterprise discounts start at at least 5% for closed models and 10% for open-weight models, with the exact rate improving according to committed spend.

Example published model rates include different prices for input, output, and cached tokens. For example, the current pricing page lists NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Ultra at $0.32 per million input tokens and $0.80 per million output tokens, while other models have different rates.

Pricing Note

BLACKBOX AI currently uses per-token pricing. Pay As You Go has no monthly platform fee or seat charge, while Enterprise uses custom annual commitments with volume discounts. Model rates vary according to the model and whether tokens are input, output, or cached.

Review

BLACKBOX AI is a strong option for developers who want AI assistance throughout the software-development process rather than only autocomplete. Its coding agents can plan and execute multi-step tasks, while the CLI and VS Code extension provide more controlled environments for reviewing and applying changes.

The multi-agent functionality is particularly interesting. Developers can compare implementations from different coding agents instead of relying entirely on one model. The ability to run agents in separate Git worktrees also helps reduce conflicts when testing alternative solutions.

The unified model router is another major advantage. Access to more than 300 models through one API can simplify model experimentation and reduce the need to maintain numerous separate integrations. OpenAI compatibility also makes it easier for developers to migrate existing applications to BLACKBOX’s endpoint.

Enterprise customers receive strong security and deployment options, including zero data retention, encryption, SSO, RBAC, audit logs, data residency, and single-tenant deployments. These capabilities make BLACKBOX more relevant to organizations with stricter security requirements than a typical consumer coding assistant.

The main consideration is pricing complexity. Because the current platform is metered per token and offers hundreds of models with different rates, actual spending depends heavily on model selection and usage. Teams running large autonomous coding workloads need to monitor consumption carefully.

BLACKBOX AI also has strong user feedback. G2 currently lists BLACKBOX at 4.5/5 from 31 reviews, with reviewers highlighting code generation, debugging assistance, productivity, and ease of use.
