DeepCode

DeepCode AI is Snyk’s purpose-built artificial intelligence technology for application security. It powers Snyk’s AI-driven code analysis, security prioritization, and automated remediation capabilities, particularly through Snyk Code. Rather than functioning as a general-purpose AI coding assistant, DeepCode AI is designed specifically to identify security vulnerabilities and help developers remediate them within their normal development workflow.

DeepCode originated as an ETH Zurich spin-off founded in 2016 by researchers working in machine learning and programming languages. Snyk acquired DeepCode in 2020 and incorporated its technology into the Snyk platform, where it became the foundation of Snyk Code’s AI-powered static application security testing capabilities.

DeepCode AI combines symbolic AI, generative AI, machine-learning techniques, and security research expertise rather than relying on a single generative AI model. Snyk says its DeepCode AI knowledge base is built using security-specific data and verified fixes from millions of permissively licensed open-source projects, and that customer data is not used to train the models.

One of DeepCode AI’s primary roles is improving SAST (Static Application Security Testing). Snyk Code analyzes source code for security weaknesses and provides developers with actionable findings through the web interface, IDEs, CLI, repositories, pull requests, and CI/CD workflows. The underlying AI engine can analyze API usage, control flow, data flow, type information, value ranges, and other characteristics of source code.

DeepCode AI also supports AI-powered security fixes. Snyk’s DeepCode AI Fix/Snyk Agent Fix capabilities can generate suggested fixes for vulnerabilities identified during code analysis. Snyk states that its hybrid approach allows generated fixes to be checked against its security analysis, helping reduce the risk of incorrect or unsafe suggestions.

Another important capability is risk-based prioritization. DeepCode AI supports Snyk’s context-aware risk scoring by considering factors such as the popularity of affected packages, the reachability of vulnerable code, and the maturity of available exploits. This helps development and security teams focus on vulnerabilities that represent greater practical risk instead of treating every finding equally.

DeepCode AI also powers DeepCode AI Search, which allows security teams to create custom queries and rules for finding patterns in their code. Snyk provides autocomplete and tooling for creating, testing, running, and saving custom rules, allowing organizations to search for security patterns beyond the platform’s predefined rules.

The technology is designed for developers who want security checks integrated directly into their existing workflows. Snyk supports IDE extensions, source-control integrations, CLI-based scanning, CI/CD pipelines, APIs, and pull-request checks. This makes DeepCode AI particularly useful for organizations adopting a shift-left security or DevSecOps approach.

Snyk currently states that DeepCode AI’s analyzer covers more than 19 programming languages and has more than 25 million data-flow cases in its knowledge base. Its AI-powered security capabilities are intended to cover both human-written and AI-generated code.

For organizations using AI coding assistants, DeepCode AI can provide an additional security layer by scanning generated code for vulnerabilities rather than assuming AI-generated code is safe. Snyk positions this capability as part of its broader AI security strategy.

Pricing

DeepCode AI is part of the Snyk platform, so there is no separately listed standalone DeepCode AI subscription. Current Snyk plans are:

  • Free: $0/month per contributing developer
  • Team: Starting at $25/month per contributing developer
  • Ignite: Starting at $1,260/year per contributing developer
  • Enterprise: Custom pricing

The Free plan includes SCA, SAST, IaC, and Container capabilities with specified usage limits. Team increases test limits and adds features such as Jira integration. Ignite provides full platform capabilities, unlimited code tests, custom security rules, and risk-based prioritization. Enterprise adds broader AppSec capabilities and enterprise-level controls.

Because DeepCode AI powers Snyk Code and other Snyk AI capabilities, availability of particular DeepCode-powered features depends on the applicable Snyk product and plan.

Review

DeepCode AI is a strong option for organizations looking to combine AI-assisted development with application security. Its biggest advantage is that it is not simply an LLM that generates security suggestions. Snyk combines symbolic analysis, machine learning, generative AI, and security research to analyze code and validate findings and fixes.

Its integration into Snyk Code also makes it practical for development teams because security analysis can happen directly inside IDEs, repositories, pull requests, CLI workflows, and CI/CD pipelines. This reduces the need for developers to leave their normal workflow to investigate security findings.

Another strength is language coverage. Snyk currently lists more than 19 supported languages for its code-analysis capabilities, including JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java/Kotlin, C/C++, C#, VB.NET, Go, PHP, Ruby, Rust, Scala, Swift/Objective-C, Apex, Dart/Flutter, and Groovy.

The main drawback is that DeepCode AI is not a standalone general-purpose AI coding assistant. It is primarily security technology embedded within the Snyk ecosystem. Teams looking mainly for code generation, autocomplete, or general programming assistance may need another tool alongside it.

Pricing can also become significant for larger organizations because Snyk’s paid plans are priced per contributing developer, while advanced enterprise capabilities require higher-tier plans or custom pricing.

For development and security teams that prioritize secure coding, SAST, vulnerability remediation, AI-generated-code security, and DevSecOps automation, DeepCode AI is a particularly relevant technology.
