GitBook AI

GitBook AI is the artificial-intelligence layer within GitBook, a documentation platform designed to help teams create, maintain, publish, search, and distribute product knowledge. GitBook AI is particularly focused on making documentation easier to discover and more useful for both documentation teams and the people consuming their docs.

One of its core capabilities is AI Search. Instead of relying only on traditional keyword matching, GitBook AI can scan an organization’s documentation and provide semantic answers to questions. Users can ask questions in natural language and receive summarized answers based on the available documentation. GitBook says AI Search can be used inside the GitBook application for internal content and on published documentation sites for searching that site’s content.

GitBook’s broader AI ecosystem now also includes GitBook Agent and GitBook Assistant. GitBook Agent helps documentation teams create, review, and maintain content. It can work from prompts, review existing documentation, follow organizational style guides, and help identify or address documentation gaps. GitBook Assistant, meanwhile, provides an AI-powered interface for users to ask questions about documentation and connected knowledge sources.

GitBook AI is designed around documentation rather than being a general-purpose chatbot. Its usefulness comes from grounding answers in product knowledge, technical documentation, and other connected sources. GitBook also automatically creates LLM-friendly versions of published documentation, including Markdown, llms.txt, and llms-full.txt, and provides an MCP server for published documentation so compatible AI tools can retrieve information directly from the docs.

The platform supports documentation workflows for technical teams, product teams, developers, customer education teams, and organizations that need a central source of product knowledge. Git Sync allows teams to work with GitHub or GitLab repositories, while integrations and APIs allow GitBook to connect with external workflows and services.

For AI-powered documentation maintenance, GitBook Agent can help write, improve, review, and update documentation. It can also work with connected tools such as GitHub, Linear, and Slack, allowing teams to bring product-development conversations and issues into documentation workflows.

GitBook also offers AI-powered translation capabilities. Teams can create translated versions of documentation and keep those translations synchronized with changes to the original content. GitBook describes the translation system as supporting multiple languages, with users able to select target languages and use AI to localize their documentation.

Privacy and data handling are also addressed in GitBook’s AI documentation. GitBook states that it uses OpenAI’s enterprise API for its AI features and that customer content is not used by GitBook to train AI or machine-learning models without prior written consent. GitBook also states that OpenAI does not use customer data processed through its enterprise API for model training or improvement.

GitBook AI is therefore best suited to organizations that already have structured documentation and want to make that knowledge easier to search, maintain, and expose through AI. Its strongest advantage is the connection between documentation management and AI-powered knowledge discovery rather than AI generation in isolation.

Pricing

GitBook currently offers Free, Premium, Ultimate, and Enterprise plans. The Free plan costs $0 per site/month and includes one free user. Premium starts at $65 per site/month plus $12 per additional user/month, while Ultimate costs $249 per site/month plus $12 per additional user/month when billed annually. Enterprise uses custom pricing.

For AI specifically, AI Search is included in Premium, Ultimate, and Enterprise, while GitBook’s current pricing page lists AI writing and editing as paid-plan features. GitBook Agent is included in Premium, Ultimate, and Enterprise according to the current pricing comparison, while more advanced Assistant capabilities are available on Ultimate and Enterprise.

GitBook also currently offers a 14-day free trial for Premium. AI translation is priced separately on Premium at $25 for the first 50,000 translated words, then $0.20 per additional 1,000 words, while it is included in Ultimate and custom-priced for Enterprise.

Review

GitBook AI is a strong choice for teams that want AI tightly connected to their documentation rather than using a standalone AI writing tool. Its AI Search capability makes large documentation collections easier to navigate by allowing users to ask natural-language questions and receive answers based on the available knowledge.

Another major strength is the combination of AI Search, GitBook Agent, AI Assistant, MCP, and LLM-ready documentation. These features allow documentation to serve not only human readers but also AI-powered workflows and coding assistants.

The main limitation is pricing. The more advanced AI capabilities are tied to paid plans, and some features such as Assistant embedding, external-source connections, and AI Insights are reserved for higher tiers. This can make GitBook more expensive for small teams that only need basic AI-powered documentation search.

Another consideration is that AI answers depend on the quality and completeness of the underlying documentation. GitBook itself recommends improving or expanding explicit documentation when AI produces incorrect answers, since clearer source content gives the AI less reason to guess.

For technical teams, SaaS companies, developer-focused businesses, and organizations with substantial product documentation, GitBook AI offers a particularly useful combination of documentation management, AI search, content maintenance, and AI-accessible knowledge.
