Metabase AI

Metabase AI is the artificial intelligence layer within Metabase, an open-source business intelligence and analytics platform designed to help organizations explore, understand, and share data. Rather than operating as a standalone AI chatbot, Metabase AI brings natural-language interaction, AI-assisted SQL generation, data analysis, and agentic capabilities directly into the analytics workflow.

The central AI assistant is Metabot, which allows users to ask questions about their organization’s data using natural language. Users can ask questions about business performance, customers, revenue, products, operations, or other metrics without necessarily writing SQL themselves. Metabot uses the organization’s semantic layer and available data context to generate queries, return results, create charts and tables, and explain the analysis. Metabase also provides controls so that Metabot only accesses information that the current user is permitted to see.

Metabase AI is particularly focused on making data analysis accessible to both technical and non-technical users. A business user can ask a question in plain language, while an analyst can use AI to generate or debug SQL, understand charts, and accelerate repetitive analytical work. This combination allows organizations to keep their existing databases and analytics workflows while adding an AI interface on top.

One of the important components of Metabase AI is AI-assisted SQL generation. Metabot can translate natural-language requests into SQL queries and help users understand or refine generated SQL. This can reduce the amount of manual query writing required for common analytical questions while still allowing experienced analysts to inspect and modify the resulting SQL.

Metabase AI also works with Metabase’s semantic layer. The quality of AI-generated answers depends heavily on having well-defined data structures, relationships, descriptions, metrics, and business terminology. Metabase has therefore expanded its Data Studio capabilities to help teams curate and manage the semantic foundation used by AI. This approach is intended to make AI-generated answers more contextual and reliable than simply sending raw database structures to a general-purpose language model.

Another major capability is the Metabase Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. MCP allows compatible AI clients and coding tools to interact with Metabase and retrieve information from the organization’s analytics environment. Metabase documents integrations with AI clients such as Claude, Codex, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible tools. This makes Metabase useful not only as a destination for AI-powered analysis but also as a data and analytics layer that external AI agents can interact with.

Metabase also provides an Agent API. The Agent API is a REST API designed for building headless, agentic business-intelligence applications on top of Metabase’s semantic layer. This gives developers a way to incorporate Metabase-powered analytics into custom AI applications and workflows rather than restricting AI interaction to the standard Metabase interface.

Metabase AI supports different approaches to AI model provisioning. Organizations can bring their own API key from supported providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Mistral, OpenRouter, and Microsoft Azure. In this setup, the organization pays the AI provider directly. Metabase Cloud customers can alternatively use Metabase’s managed AI service, which provides model management and usage-based billing.

Privacy and data control are important parts of the platform. Metabase states that queries run against the organization’s warehouse and that Metabase does not ingest, store, or synchronize the underlying business data for AI processing. AI uses the semantic-layer definitions and permissions available within Metabase to construct and execute queries. Metabase also provides AI usage controls and analytics so administrators can manage access, monitor token usage, review conversations, and audit AI activity.

Metabot is also available through Slack, allowing users to interact with their analytics directly from conversations. Users can ask questions, receive charts, and manage subscriptions without leaving Slack. This extends AI-assisted analytics beyond the main Metabase interface and makes data access more convenient for business teams.

The platform has continued expanding its AI capabilities rapidly. In 2026, Metabase made its AI tools open source, introduced the official MCP server, enabled self-hosted Metabot with user-selected models, added Metabot in Slack, and expanded its agent-oriented functionality. Later releases added AI governance features including user-group controls, token and message limits, system prompts, AI usage analytics, and dashboards-as-code workflows.

Metabase AI can be deployed through Metabase Cloud or self-hosted environments. The open-source edition provides access to AI functionality, while paid plans add capabilities such as advanced governance, permissions, auditing, embedding, and enterprise support. This makes Metabase AI suitable for organizations that want more control over where their analytics platform runs and which AI provider powers their AI features.

Metabase itself has been available since 2015, with the company established in the mid-2010s. Metabase AI is a newer layer that has evolved from Metabot and AI-assisted analytics into a broader AI platform encompassing natural-language analysis, SQL generation, MCP, APIs, AI agents, and governance.

For organizations already using databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, SQL Server, or MongoDB, Metabase AI can provide a natural-language interface over existing business data without requiring the organization to replace its underlying data infrastructure. Metabase officially maintains connectors for a broad range of databases.

Metabase AI is therefore best understood as AI-powered business intelligence rather than a general-purpose AI assistant. Its strongest value comes from connecting natural-language AI capabilities with governed business data, semantic models, SQL, dashboards, visualization, and enterprise analytics workflows.

Pricing

Metabase offers several plans, with AI functionality available across its editions. The current pricing structure includes Open Source, Starter, Pro, and Enterprise. The Open Source edition is free, Starter begins at $100 per month plus $6 per user per month after the included users, Pro begins at $575 per month plus $12 per user per month after the included users, and Enterprise uses custom pricing. Annual billing provides a 10% discount on the listed subscription prices.

Metabase AI itself does not require a separate AI subscription when users bring their own AI provider API key. In that setup, the organization pays the selected AI provider directly. Metabase Cloud also offers a managed AI service priced at $3.75 per 1 million tokens, with the first 1 million tokens each month free. Enterprise customers can arrange custom AI billing.

Pricing Note

Metabase AI is available across Metabase plans, including the free Open Source edition. AI costs depend on how the organization powers the AI features. Teams can bring their own provider API key and pay the provider directly, or Metabase Cloud customers can use the managed Metabase AI service at a usage-based token rate. Enterprise AI billing can be customized.

Review

Metabase AI is a strong option for organizations that want to add natural-language analytics to an existing business-intelligence environment. Its biggest advantage is that AI is connected directly to business data, semantic models, permissions, dashboards, and SQL rather than operating as an isolated chatbot.

Metabot is particularly useful for users who need quick answers from business data without writing every query manually. Analysts can also benefit from SQL generation, chart explanations, and AI-assisted development. The MCP server and Agent API make the platform more interesting for developers building AI-powered analytics applications and agentic workflows.

Another major strength is deployment flexibility. Organizations can self-host Metabase and bring their own AI provider, which can be valuable for teams with specific security, privacy, compliance, or data-residency requirements. Metabase’s open-source approach also gives technical teams more control than many proprietary BI platforms.

The main limitation is that AI accuracy depends strongly on the quality of the underlying data model and semantic layer. Metabase itself emphasizes the importance of curated context, definitions, relationships, and trusted business terminology. AI-generated SQL and analysis should therefore still be reviewed, particularly for important financial, operational, or regulatory decisions.

Pricing can also become more complex for larger organizations because the platform combines base subscription costs, user-based charges, and optional AI token usage. Organizations using their own AI provider have to manage that provider’s costs separately.

Metabase AI is best suited to businesses, data teams, analysts, developers, and organizations that want self-service analytics with modern AI capabilities. It is especially attractive for teams that value open-source deployment, database flexibility, semantic-layer governance, and the ability to connect external AI agents to their analytics environment.
