Mintlify Writer is an AI-powered documentation writing and maintenance capability within the Mintlify documentation platform. It helps engineering teams, technical writers, developers, product managers, and other contributors create, edit, and maintain technical documentation with AI while keeping documentation connected to the team’s existing Git-based workflow.
Mintlify originally developed its documentation platform around docs-as-code, using Markdown/MDX files stored in Git. Its AI writing capabilities have evolved into the Mintlify Agent, which can research existing documentation and connected repositories, plan documentation changes, write or revise content, validate the resulting documentation, and open a pull request for human review. This allows AI to handle much of the repetitive documentation work while retaining the team’s normal review process.
Mintlify Writer is designed specifically for documentation rather than general-purpose content generation. The AI can work with existing documentation context to produce or improve technical content while following the structure and terminology already used by a documentation project.
The current Mintlify Agent can receive instructions through a prompt, Slack thread, Linear issue, or file attachment. It can research existing documentation and connected repositories before planning and implementing the requested documentation update.
This context-aware approach is useful for documentation teams because technical writing often requires understanding a product, its existing terminology, code examples, configuration, and documentation structure rather than simply generating generic text.
Mintlify’s AI writing workflow supports both creating new documentation and updating existing pages. The Agent can process files and images, make changes across multiple pages, and address feedback left on pull requests.
The system is designed to keep humans in the review loop. Rather than directly changing the main branch, the Agent creates a pull request for its documentation changes. This allows technical writers, developers, or documentation reviewers to inspect and approve AI-generated updates before publication.
The writing capability can be used for common technical-documentation tasks such as improving explanations, updating outdated information, adding screenshots or diagrams, creating documentation for newly released features, and maintaining consistency across documentation.
Mintlify also provides an AI-powered web editor that allows non-developers to contribute to documentation without directly editing Markdown or MDX files. The web editor supports visual editing, collaboration, comments, suggestions, and Git synchronization.
This combination gives technical writers and other contributors a more accessible editing environment while allowing engineering teams to retain version control and Git-based review workflows.
One of Mintlify Writer’s strongest applications is documentation maintenance. Documentation can become outdated when software changes faster than the accompanying written content. Mintlify’s Workflows can trigger the Agent when repositories are updated or according to configured schedules.
The Agent can inspect changes, determine which documentation needs updating, modify the relevant files, run checks, and create a pull request. This enables organizations to automate recurring documentation maintenance rather than relying entirely on engineers or technical writers to remember every update.
Mintlify combines AI writing capabilities with automated API documentation. OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, and GraphQL specifications can be used to generate structured API reference documentation, while the platform provides an interactive API playground for developers to test requests directly from documentation.
This makes Mintlify Writer particularly relevant to API-first companies and developer-tool businesses where documentation must stay synchronized with frequently changing endpoints.
Mintlify’s AI capabilities are not limited to writers. The platform also provides an AI Assistant that lets visitors ask questions about documentation and receive answers grounded in the documentation itself.
Mintlify introduced its AI Assistant using agentic retrieval technology so that users can receive contextual responses with citations and links to relevant documentation.
This creates two complementary AI experiences: Writer/Agent capabilities help teams create and maintain documentation, while the Assistant helps documentation users find and understand information.
Mintlify also structures documentation for consumption by AI systems. Documentation sites can provide machine-readable Markdown and files such as llms.txt, llms-full.txt, and skill.md. Mintlify also automatically generates MCP servers for documentation sites, allowing AI applications to access documentation as a structured knowledge source.
This is increasingly important for developer-focused companies because coding agents such as Cursor, Claude Code, and Copilot can use product documentation as context when generating integrations and code.
Mintlify Writer is designed for teams rather than only individual technical writers. Developers, technical writers, product managers, support teams, and other contributors can participate through the web editor, Git workflows, pull requests, Slack, and other connected workflows.
Mintlify’s current platform reports more than 20,000 teams using its documentation infrastructure, with customers including companies such as Anthropic, Coinbase, Replit, Perplexity, AT&T, and Microsoft.
Mintlify combines AI writing with the broader infrastructure required to publish and maintain documentation. Teams can connect a Git repository, automatically deploy documentation when changes are pushed, use custom domains, configure authentication, add search, generate API references, and create preview deployments.
This means Mintlify Writer is best understood as part of an end-to-end documentation platform rather than as a standalone AI text editor.
Mintlify currently uses a subscription-based pricing model with usage-based AI credits.
The Starter plan is designed for individuals and small teams. It includes:
The current pricing page lists the Starter plan at $0/month.
The Pro plan is currently listed at $450/month and is designed for startups and growing teams.
It adds:
The Pro plan includes 10,000 AI credits per month, with additional usage charged at $0.01 per credit.
Enterprise pricing is customized for larger organizations. It includes the Pro functionality plus enterprise capabilities such as:
Mintlify Writer is a strong AI documentation solution because it combines AI-assisted writing with the infrastructure required to maintain technical documentation at scale.
Its biggest advantage is context. Instead of functioning only as a generic AI text generator, the Mintlify Agent can research existing documentation, connected repositories, files, and other context before making changes. It can then create a pull request so humans can review the resulting documentation. This makes the workflow particularly suitable for engineering organizations where documentation needs to remain aligned with rapidly changing software.
The Git-based workflow is another significant strength. Documentation remains connected to version control, while the web editor allows non-engineering contributors to make changes without needing to work directly in Git or Markdown. This combination makes Mintlify suitable for technical writers as well as developers.
Mintlify is also particularly strong for API and developer documentation. OpenAPI and AsyncAPI support, interactive API playgrounds, machine-readable documentation, MCP servers, and AI-assisted maintenance give it a broader scope than a conventional AI writing assistant.
The main drawback is pricing at the professional level. The current Pro plan is substantially more expensive than many general-purpose AI writing tools, so Mintlify is primarily attractive to companies that need a full documentation platform rather than simply an AI writer.
Another limitation is that the product is highly focused on documentation. It is not intended to replace a general-purpose writing assistant for marketing copy, creative writing, or everyday business content. Its greatest value comes from technical, developer, product, and knowledge documentation.
Mintlify also emphasizes human review of AI-generated documentation. AI can misunderstand technical context or introduce inaccurate information, so organizations should continue reviewing generated content before publication.
Mintlify Writer is particularly well suited to software companies, API providers, developer-tool businesses, and engineering organizations that want AI to accelerate documentation creation and maintenance while retaining Git-based review, structured publishing, and human oversight.
