Pi

Pi is a personal AI assistant developed by Inflection AI and designed around natural, emotionally intelligent conversations. Rather than positioning itself primarily as a productivity or enterprise chatbot, Pi is built as a personal intelligence partner that people can use to think through decisions, talk through ideas, learn about subjects, plan activities, set reminders, and have voice conversations. Inflection describes Pi as a human-centered AI designed to make interactions with AI more helpful, conversational, and personal.

Pi can be used for everyday conversations as well as practical tasks. Its current experience includes features for reflecting on the day, learning about interesting topics, working through decisions, creating reminders and to-dos, and talking with Pi by voice. Pi can also remember information across chats, including lasting preferences, interests, goals, routines, and other information the user explicitly wants it to retain. Users can view, edit, or remove these memories through Pi’s settings.

Voice interaction is an important part of Pi. Users can speak with Pi through supported mobile devices and the web, allowing conversations to take place without typing. Pi also supports text-based interaction and is available through its web experience and mobile applications. The service is additionally available through Apple Messages, extending Pi’s conversational experience into Apple’s messaging environment.

Pi’s personality and conversational behavior are powered by Inflection’s AI models. Inflection’s current developer documentation identifies Pi 3.0 as the flagship model powering Pi’s consumer experiences, while its Help Center documentation also describes the model configuration used in the Pi product. Inflection’s broader model platform includes models designed for personal intelligence, productivity, and agentic workflows.

The assistant is particularly suited to conversational use cases. Users can ask Pi to explain something, help them think through a difficult choice, brainstorm ideas, prepare for a conversation, or simply discuss a subject. This conversational approach is central to Pi’s identity and differentiates it from AI products primarily focused on coding, document generation, enterprise automation, or image creation.

Pi also includes practical personal-assistant features. Users can create reminders and to-dos, and Pi can help organize everyday activities. Its memory system is designed to retain information that remains useful over time, such as a user’s name, interests, food preferences, work or studies, communication preferences, and ongoing goals. Temporary or one-off information is intended to be treated differently from lasting memories.

Pi is also designed with a strong emphasis on safety and responsible AI. Inflection publishes policies covering content moderation, privacy, and crisis prevention. The company says Pi uses multiple safety mechanisms and that the system is designed to avoid providing assistance in areas such as harmful behavior, misinformation, regulated goods, and certain high-risk advice.

The product has some limitations that are important when evaluating it. Pi currently does not support image generation, image uploading, or image editing, according to its Help Center. It is therefore primarily a conversational, text, voice, learning, and personal-assistance product rather than a multimodal creative-generation platform.

Pi is also different from a general-purpose AI development platform. Inflection separately provides an API and developer platform for its models, but the consumer Pi experience itself is primarily presented as a personal AI assistant. Developers can access Inflection’s models through the company’s developer platform, including Pi-oriented models and productivity models.

Inflection AI introduced Pi publicly in May 2023. The company describes Pi as one of its pioneering personal-intelligence products and continues to develop the underlying models and experiences through Inflection AI Labs. Current research areas include voice experiences, fine-tuning, constrained inference, model distillation, and other technologies intended to improve personal AI.

Overall, Pi is best understood as a personal conversational AI assistant rather than a business automation platform. Its strongest areas are natural conversation, personal reflection, learning, decision support, reminders, voice interaction, and personalized assistance. Its memory system and conversational personality are central to the product’s positioning, while its separate developer platform gives organizations and developers access to Inflection’s underlying AI models.
