Power BI Copilot

Power BI Copilot is Microsoft’s generative AI assistant for Power BI, designed to help business users, report authors, and data-model creators work with business data more efficiently. It brings natural-language interaction into the Power BI analytics environment, allowing users to ask questions about their data, summarize reports, generate visuals, create DAX queries, and improve semantic models without relying entirely on manual analysis or traditional report-building workflows.

Copilot works across Power BI Desktop and the Power BI service. For business users, one of its main functions is conversational analysis. Users can ask questions about a report or semantic model and receive answers based on the available business data. Copilot can summarize reports and topics, identify useful insights, answer questions about data, and assist with creating and analyzing visuals. Microsoft currently provides several experiences, including the report Copilot pane, a standalone Copilot experience, and Copilot within Power BI apps. Some of these experiences are generally available while others remain in preview.

For report creators, Power BI Copilot can assist with report development. It can help create and edit report pages from natural-language instructions, summarize the underlying semantic model, generate summary visuals, write DAX queries, and create descriptions for measures. This makes Copilot useful not only for consuming analytics but also for building and maintaining Power BI reports.

Copilot can also assist semantic-model authors. In web modeling, it can identify problems such as unclear structures and inconsistent naming, recommend improvements to model design, and help refine DAX business measures or manage tables, columns, and relationships.

A major advantage of Power BI Copilot is its connection to the Power BI semantic model. When a question relates to information contained in the semantic model, Copilot uses that model to formulate its response rather than relying only on general-purpose language-model knowledge. This allows organizations to use natural-language interaction while keeping the analysis connected to their business data and existing permissions.

Power BI Copilot also works as part of the broader Microsoft Fabric ecosystem. Power BI reports and semantic models can be used as business-data sources for Microsoft Copilot, allowing users to ask questions about Power BI information from Microsoft Copilot experiences. Microsoft describes Fabric IQ as an integration that brings trusted Power BI business data into Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat while respecting existing Power BI permissions and security controls.

The platform is particularly useful for organizations that already use Microsoft Power BI for business intelligence. Rather than replacing Power BI’s existing reporting and visualization capabilities, Copilot adds a natural-language layer that helps users explore, understand, and create analytics more quickly.

Power BI Copilot is also designed for longer and more detailed prompts. Microsoft currently documents a limit of up to 10,000 characters per prompt across Copilot surfaces, including the standalone experience, report Copilot pane, Power BI apps, Power BI Mobile, and Power BI Embedded.

Data preparation remains important. Microsoft recommends preparing semantic models specifically for AI because a well-structured model with appropriate business context helps Copilot produce more useful and reliable responses. Poorly prepared data models can result in generic or inaccurate answers.

Power BI Copilot is not simply a free AI feature attached to a standard Power BI account. Current Microsoft requirements state that Copilot requires a paid Microsoft Fabric capacity of F2 or higher or Power BI Premium capacity of P1 or higher. Trial capacities and free SKUs are not supported for the documented Power BI Copilot experience. Administrators must also enable the appropriate Copilot and Azure OpenAI settings, and the capacity must be located in a supported region.

Another consideration is language support. Microsoft currently states that multilingual use of the standalone and app-scoped Copilot experiences is not officially supported, although prompts submitted in languages other than English may sometimes return relevant responses. Therefore, English is the safest language to list as the officially supported working language rather than claiming broad multilingual support.

For organizations already invested in Microsoft’s data ecosystem, Power BI Copilot provides a strong combination of conversational analytics, report creation, DAX assistance, semantic-model support, and integration with Microsoft Fabric. Its main limitation is that access depends on suitable paid capacity, regional availability, administrative configuration, and the quality of the underlying semantic model.

Pricing

Power BI Copilot is not priced as a simple standalone consumer AI subscription. Access is tied to Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft Fabric capacity requirements.

Microsoft currently lists Power BI Pro at $14 per user/month when paid yearly and Power BI Premium Per User at $24 per user/month when paid yearly on its U.S. pricing page. However, a Pro or Premium Per User license alone is not sufficient for Copilot. Power BI Copilot requires supported paid Fabric capacity or Power BI Premium capacity.

Microsoft also provides Fabric capacity options, with Copilot consumption billed through the applicable Fabric capacity. Copilot compute is measured separately from downstream operations such as semantic-model queries, data refreshes, or email subscriptions.

Review

Power BI Copilot is a strong choice for organizations that already rely on Power BI and want to introduce natural-language assistance into their analytics workflow. Its biggest strength is that it is embedded directly into Microsoft’s established business-intelligence environment rather than functioning as a separate spreadsheet or chatbot tool.

The ability to ask questions about reports and semantic models, generate DAX queries, create report content, summarize information, and receive AI-assisted modeling recommendations can significantly reduce repetitive work for analysts and report authors.

Its enterprise positioning is another advantage. Copilot works within Microsoft’s broader Fabric environment and respects existing permissions and organizational controls. Microsoft also provides administrative controls for enabling or disabling Copilot and documents requirements for regional and data-boundary configurations.

The main drawback is accessibility. Users cannot simply create a free Power BI account and expect to receive the full Copilot experience. Supported paid capacity is required, and Microsoft states that Power BI Pro or Premium Per User by itself does not provide the necessary capacity for Copilot.

Another limitation is that some Copilot experiences remain in preview, and availability varies by region and workload. The quality of the generated responses also depends heavily on semantic-model preparation and the quality of the underlying data.

For Microsoft-centric organizations, however, Power BI Copilot is one of the more capable options for combining business intelligence with generative AI. It is especially valuable for data analysts, business users, reporting teams, and organizations managing large Power BI environments.
