Sierra

Sierra is an enterprise conversational AI platform that enables businesses to build and deploy AI agents for customer-facing experiences. Founded by Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor, Sierra launched publicly in February 2024 with a focus on using AI agents to handle complex customer interactions rather than simply answering basic questions.

Sierra’s agents are designed to understand customer intent, reason through multi-step requests, access business systems, and take actions on behalf of customers. This allows an agent to do more than provide information—for example, it can help process an insurance claim, return an order, manage a subscription, or assist with a mortgage application.

The platform supports multichannel customer experiences, allowing businesses to deploy one AI agent across chat, SMS, WhatsApp, email, voice, and ChatGPT. Sierra states that its agents can operate across 59 languages, making the platform suitable for organizations serving international customer bases.

One of Sierra’s notable capabilities is its agent-building and optimization workflow. Its Ghostwriter product can create production-ready agents from natural-language instructions and business materials such as SOPs, transcripts, images, and audio. It can also help optimize agents when problems or opportunities are identified.

Sierra’s Horizon platform extends this approach to longer-running customer relationships. It combines customer context, memory, long-horizon planning, outcome optimization, and proactive engagement so agents can work toward outcomes that may take days or weeks rather than being limited to one conversation.

The platform also includes tools for understanding and improving agent performance. Explorer, for example, lets teams ask questions about customer conversations and analytics in natural language and receive recommendations based on the data. Sierra also provides testing, monitoring, and visibility into agent behavior.

Voice is another major part of Sierra’s offering. Its voice agents can handle inbound and outbound calls, interruptions, background noise, accents, and real-time sentiment detection. Sierra also introduced Voice Personas, which allow businesses to shape how their agents sound and communicate.

Sierra is designed for complex enterprise environments where AI agents need access to existing business systems. The platform can connect to systems of record such as CRM and order-management systems, enabling agents to perform actions rather than merely provide answers.

The company has focused heavily on enterprise reliability and security. Sierra currently lists certifications and compliance frameworks including SOC 2, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, HIPAA, GDPR, EU AI Act, FedRAMP, and PCI DSS on its website.

Sierra’s customer base includes companies across financial services, telecommunications, technology, healthcare, travel, retail, and other sectors. Sierra says that 40% of the Fortune 50 partner with the company.

Pricing

Sierra uses an outcome-based pricing model rather than a conventional seat-based subscription. Customers pay based on valuable outcomes delivered by the AI agent, such as successfully resolving a customer interaction or completing another agreed business outcome.

Sierra explains that outcome-based pricing is designed to align the company’s incentives with its customers: when the agent delivers the agreed result, Sierra gets paid. The company can also use consumption-based or blended pricing where an outcome-based model is not appropriate.

Sierra does not publish standard prices on its public website. Businesses need to contact Sierra to discuss their requirements and pricing structure.

Review

Sierra is a strong choice for large organizations that need AI to handle real customer-service and commerce processes, not just generate responses. Its combination of reasoning, system integrations, multichannel deployment, voice capabilities, monitoring, and outcome optimization gives it a much broader scope than a conventional customer-service chatbot.

Its biggest differentiator is the emphasis on business outcomes. Sierra’s agents can be designed to complete tasks such as returns, claims, purchases, subscriptions, and other customer journeys. The outcome-based pricing model also makes the company’s commercial approach different from most traditional SaaS products.

The trade-off is that Sierra is primarily an enterprise platform. There is no simple public self-service price list, and organizations generally need to work with Sierra to design, integrate, and deploy their agents.

Best suited for: enterprise customer-experience teams, financial institutions, retailers, healthcare organizations, telecommunications companies, travel businesses, and technology companies seeking advanced AI-agent automation.
