Warp is an AI-powered, open-source Agentic Development Environment designed to help developers build, test, deploy, debug, and automate software from the terminal. What began as a modern terminal has evolved into a broader development platform that combines a high-performance terminal, coding agents, cloud agents, and automation capabilities.
The core Warp application provides a modern terminal experience with features such as block-based navigation, multi-line editing, syntax highlighting, rich completions, and a built-in code editor. Warp is built with Rust and is designed to provide a faster and more productive alternative to traditional terminal workflows.
A major part of Warp is its Warp Agent, which can write and edit code, investigate bugs, run commands, debug issues, and work through multi-step development tasks. Developers can interact with the agent directly inside Warp or use the standalone Warp Agent CLI from other terminals, including through SSH. Cloud agents can also run tasks in the background without requiring the developer to remain actively involved.
Warp supports an agentic development workflow in which developers can describe what they want in natural language and allow the agent to plan and execute the necessary technical steps. Developers retain control over agent actions and can review changes, guide the agent during execution, and approve actions before they are carried out.
The platform also includes a native code editor and AI-powered code features. Warp Code provides code generation and editing through AI-powered diffs, allowing developers to inspect, refine, and apply changes. Codebase Context helps agents understand a Git-tracked codebase, while project rules and commands can be used to customize how agents operate within repositories. Warp also includes an interactive code-review workflow where developers can comment on agent-generated changes and ask the agent to make corrections.
Another notable capability is Full Terminal Use, which allows Warp’s agent to interact with terminal applications such as REPLs, debuggers, and full-screen terminal programs. Warp also provides /plan for specification-driven development, helping developers establish an implementation plan before execution.
Warp extends beyond local development through its cloud-agent and automation capabilities. Cloud agents can respond to events from tools such as Slack, Linear, and GitHub, run scheduled tasks, operate across multiple repositories, and execute several tasks in parallel. Each run can be tracked and shared, providing visibility into what an agent is doing.
The platform has also expanded into Warp Factories, which are designed to automate software-development workflows at scale. Factories can coordinate fleets of coding agents across the software development lifecycle, including tasks such as triage, specification, implementation, review, verification, and deployment. Warp describes Factories as open infrastructure that can work with different models and agent harnesses.
Warp is designed to be flexible about the AI models developers use. Its current platform supports a range of models from providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and other model providers. Warp also supports bringing your own API keys, allowing developers to use their own model-provider accounts on supported plans.
Integrations are another important part of Warp’s development workflow. Developers can connect Warp agents with tools such as Slack, Linear, GitHub, GitLab, Jira, and custom webhooks. These integrations allow software-development tasks to originate from the applications teams already use. For example, an issue or message can trigger an agent to investigate a problem, make changes, and potentially create a pull request.
Warp also provides developer-oriented security and privacy controls. The company states that Warp is SOC 2 compliant and uses Zero Data Retention policies with its contracted LLM providers. Enterprise capabilities include additional data-governance controls, SAML-based SSO, custom inference options, and the ability to run cloud agents on an organization’s own infrastructure.
For programming support, Warp’s code editor integrates with Language Server Protocol servers. Current built-in language-server support includes Rust, Go, Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, and C/C++, providing features such as diagnostics, go-to-definition, reference searching, hover information, and formatting.
Warp is now open source under the AGPL v3 license for its client. The company announced the move to open source in April 2026, making the Warp client source available for community participation and contribution.
Warp is particularly suited to software developers, DevOps engineers, platform teams, engineering organizations, and companies looking to automate repetitive development tasks. Its combination of terminal capabilities, coding agents, cloud automation, integrations, and multi-model support makes it more than a conventional terminal application.
Warp currently uses a freemium and usage-based pricing model. The Free plan costs $0/month and includes the modern terminal, Warp Agent CLI access, limited cloud-agent access, limited Warp Drive and collaboration features, and the ability to bring your own AI inference.
The Build plan starts at $20/month on monthly billing and includes 1,500 credits, full Warp Agent access, extended cloud-agent access, higher codebase-indexing limits, unlimited Warp Drive objects and collaboration, and additional usage options. Annual billing is currently displayed at $18/month.
The Max plan starts at $200/month monthly, or $180/month with annual billing, and includes 18,000 credits. The Business plan starts at $50/user/month monthly, or $45/user/month annually, and adds team-oriented capabilities such as usage metrics, administrative data controls, BYOK/custom inference endpoints, and SAML-based SSO.
The Enterprise plan uses custom pricing and provides advanced controls including unlimited seats, custom shared credit pools, enterprise data governance, an Analytics API, multi-admin support, BYOLLM, self-hosted cloud agents, custom codebase indexing, and dedicated implementation support.
Warp is a compelling option for developers who want AI assistance directly inside their development environment rather than switching between a terminal, editor, and separate AI application. Its combination of a modern terminal, coding agent, code editor, code review, and automation capabilities creates a cohesive workflow for AI-assisted software development.
One of Warp’s strongest advantages is its flexibility. Developers can use the built-in Warp Agent, run the Agent CLI in another terminal, connect cloud agents to external workflows, or build larger automated processes with Warp Factories. Support for multiple AI models and BYOK also gives users more control over how AI is incorporated into their workflow.
The integration ecosystem is another strength. Connecting agents to Slack, Linear, GitHub, GitLab, Jira, and webhooks can make AI-powered development useful beyond the local terminal. This is particularly valuable for teams handling bug investigations, code reviews, issue triage, maintenance, and recurring engineering tasks.
The main drawback is the usage-based nature of its AI pricing. Developers who use agents heavily may need additional credits or a higher-tier subscription. Some advanced collaboration, governance, cloud-agent, and enterprise features are also restricted to paid plans.
Warp is best viewed as an AI-native development environment rather than simply an AI terminal. For developers who want AI agents deeply integrated into coding and automation workflows, it offers a broad and increasingly capable toolset.
