Microsoft Designer is an AI-powered graphic design and image editing application from Microsoft. It is designed to help people create professional-looking visual content using natural-language prompts and easy-to-use editing tools, making graphic design more accessible to users who may not have extensive design experience. Microsoft positions Designer as a tool for creating, designing, and editing visual content with AI.
The platform can generate custom images from written descriptions and provides tools for creating social media graphics, greeting cards, invitations, stickers, collages, avatars, monograms, wallpapers, banners, and other visual content. Users can start from an AI-generated concept, a template, or a blank canvas and then continue editing the result. This combination of generation and editing allows users to move from an idea to a finished design within the same environment.
One of Microsoft Designer’s defining characteristics is its integration with the wider Microsoft ecosystem. Designer is available as a web and mobile application, while selected Designer capabilities are also integrated into Microsoft products and services. Microsoft documentation identifies integrations with applications including Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, and OneNote. This allows users to create or incorporate AI-generated visual content into documents, presentations, emails, chats, and notes.
Microsoft Designer also works as an AI image generator. Users can describe an image they want to create and receive generated options that can then be downloaded, copied, or opened for further editing. Microsoft says Designer uses generative AI to turn words and ideas into custom images and designs.
Beyond image creation, Designer includes several AI-assisted editing capabilities. Users can remove unwanted objects, blur or remove backgrounds, upscale images, restyle images, crop photographs, add text, resize designs, and apply other adjustments. These tools make Designer useful not only for creating new graphics but also for improving existing photographs and visual assets.
The platform also provides AI assistance for text inside designs. Users can ask Designer to generate text suggestions or rewrite existing text. This can be useful when creating social posts, invitations, promotional graphics, banners, and other visual communications where both the wording and visual presentation matter.
Templates are another important part of the Designer experience. Instead of starting from a completely blank canvas, users can search for templates and inspiration based on keywords and then customize the selected design. Microsoft Support describes workflows for finding templates, choosing a design, adding images and text, and using AI-powered suggestions to refine the result.
Microsoft Designer can therefore serve several different creative needs. Individuals can use it for personal invitations, greeting cards, social media graphics, wallpapers, stickers, and photo editing. Students and educators can use it to produce visual materials and presentation graphics. Small businesses and creators can use it to develop promotional graphics, social content, banners, and other marketing visuals, although Microsoft’s current FAQ states that the Designer personal account experience is licensed for personal, non-commercial use.
The service is available through a Microsoft account and can be accessed through the Designer website and mobile applications. Microsoft also makes certain Designer functionality available through Microsoft 365 applications. The company says Designer is free to use, while subscriptions can provide higher usage limits.
Microsoft’s current credit system is shared across certain AI experiences. The company explains that users receive a fresh allocation of credits each month, and credits are deducted when interacting with eligible AI features. Users who need more usage can upgrade to Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium plans. Microsoft states that these subscriptions can provide up to four times more credits for the account owner for Designer and related Copilot experiences.
The current Microsoft 365 Personal offering includes higher usage for AI image creation and editing in Designer alongside other Microsoft 365 applications and services. Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year on its U.S. site, although pricing can vary by market. For example, Microsoft’s India site currently lists Microsoft 365 Personal at ₹689 per month.
One limitation is that Designer is currently oriented toward personal use. Microsoft’s FAQ explicitly states that Designer is licensed for personal, non-commercial use with a Microsoft account. This is an important consideration for organizations or creators who intend to use the service commercially and should be reflected in a software directory listing rather than assuming that every generated asset is automatically cleared for commercial use.
Another consideration is that AI-generated content can have imperfections. Microsoft notes that text appearing inside generated images may contain spelling errors or may not appear in the requested language. As with other generative AI design tools, users should review generated visuals carefully before using them.
Microsoft Designer has received generally positive but relatively limited third-party review coverage. Capterra’s August 2026 listing reports a 4.2/5 overall rating from five reviews, while its more recent alternatives page reports 4.3/5 from six reviews. One reviewer highlighted the straightforward interface, template library, background removal, and potential of its generative AI features, while also noting that AI design capabilities were still developing. Because the review sample is small, these ratings should be treated as indicative rather than representative of all users.
Microsoft Designer is particularly suitable for users who want a straightforward AI-assisted design tool connected to Microsoft’s ecosystem. Its combination of image generation, editing, templates, text assistance, and Microsoft 365 integration makes it useful for everyday visual creation without requiring advanced graphic design expertise.
Overall, Microsoft Designer provides a convenient combination of generative AI and graphic design functionality. Its strongest differentiator is its connection to Microsoft’s broader productivity ecosystem, allowing users to move between visual creation and applications such as Word and PowerPoint. For users who primarily need quick graphics, AI-generated images, photo edits, social content, and presentation visuals, Designer provides these capabilities in an accessible browser and mobile experience.
Pricing Model: Freemium / subscription through Microsoft 365.

Pricing Note: Designer itself is free to use with a Microsoft account. Microsoft 365 subscriptions provide higher usage limits and additional benefits. Microsoft’s current FAQ states that the personal Designer experience is licensed for personal, non-commercial use.
Review: Capterra reports 4.2/5 from five reviews on its August 2026 listing, while its updated alternatives page reports 4.3/5 from six reviews. Reviewers have highlighted ease of use, templates, background removal, and AI design capabilities. The small number of reviews means the ratings should be interpreted cautiously.
